    Clinching -- How To?

Did a search on this site, didn't find it.

How do you clinch? Legally? What are the rules, etiquette, pitfalls, etc?

Right now, to get room, I crash into my opponent with my gloves on my eyebrows and bulldozer him back. Squats FTW. But I'm missing a technique that other guys my size use a lot.

Who can teach me how to clinch, and how to practice it?

    what your doing is smothering

to clinch all you do is tangle your arms together and try to lock his arms in place with yours

Sounds easy enough, but more questions: Do you hit on the break? Are you jockeying for some sort of position, so that you can deliver a solid punch when you step back into range? Are you trying to get room, or trying to stop him from punching, or just trying to wear him down? If someone clinches you, what are the accepted -- and effective -- methods of getting out of it?

The "how to" of this question depends on WHY you want to clinch. If you are looking to get inside on your opponent, then you can. If you want to know how to take a break, different tactic. To get inside (assuming your opponent is a righty) - Cover up like you have been to either draw your opponent in or protect yourself as you go forward. The object is to get your opponent to drop his hands or throw a body punch with his right hand. When this happens, you drop your LEFT arm over his upper arm/shoulder and "hook it." This isn't legal if you just hold him there, but guys get away with it all the time. When you hook his arm (right arm), you should have your head basically d****d on his shoulder, like you were slowdancing. IMPORTANT - Your head needs to be on HIS right side. You will get KO'ed if you go on the left. Now, this whole process should take less than a second, and your likely to get kidney punched by his other hand. After another half-second, unhook his arm and take a quick half-step back. Keep the arm doing the unhooking low to prevent him from counter-punching with his right, and you should buy yourself a nice straight right or right hook. Hope this helps, sorry if its a little convoluted.

If your trying to clinch then just get your arms inside of his and his his body and hold tight.

When your in there if you dont want the guy to hit you with his right then just lift up your elbow and it will raise his arm, this will keep him from hitting you with anything meaningfull. If you dont want to get hit with the left do the same with the other arm.

One thing that I found in the amatuers when clinching was to act like your trying to pull the arm out. I would tug a few times on him, making it look like he was holding me and often the ref would caution him for holding. I got to take some breathes and he gets warned for holding. I liked that deal.

That is EXACTLY what I am talkin' about. Thanks, Rockin'.

I know holding is frowned-upon, but people do it, and if I don't learn how to do it I'm gonna get my clock cleaned. Last night I sparred against a guy who kept trying to wrap me up -- I think he just didn't want to get hit (and who can blame him? ) and he was wearing me down -- and pissing me off -- real bad.

Grab him like you do your girl until the ref tells you to stop....Then do it again and again, until the ref takes away a point. Then you might have to fight or give up.
