When you are told to stand “shoulder width” in terms of a boxing stance, is this vertical wide or horizontal wide? I guess what I mean is have my legs spread more apart side to side than my shoulders or more front to back spread apart from my shoulder width?

You should have a coach that is telling you whether you are doing it correctly or not. You can't learn shyt about boxing on YT, I promise you that. In fact, you can create problems/habits that will slow your learning when you see an actual coach. A big thing in any physical discipline is not just what you're doing right, but what you're doing wrong. You have to have someone evaluating your form.
Boxing form is all rooted in muscle memory. That's why you drill the same things over and over. Once you develop muscle memory for flawed/incorrect movements, stances, etc, it takes a long time to un-learn it.
