    Sprained thumb/fighting tomorrow

I caught my sparring partners elbow last night and sprained my thumb. I'm late tomorrow night, any tips on how to get through it as I dont really want to pull out.

Its painful around the knuckle part of the thumb front and back. I couldn't close my fist and clench it last night but I've been putting it in ice cold water for 10 mins as often as possible and using volterol gel and today I can close the fist. Would ibuprofen tablets help aswell

You can use ibuprofen tablets today, but don't use them the day of your fight.

Keep icing it, its best to submerge the whole hand in a bucket of ice filled water. Do that for 10-15 mins at a time as you can bear it.
If you can compress it somehow that would help as well.

For the fight you need to be able to make a fist, but the thumb isn't really involved in punching all that much, so just wrap/tape it up well when they wrap your hands and you should be g2g.

So mow that you can close your fist, imo it's just the pain issue (you know that because it's injured, you can almost guarantee hitting it awkwardly on your opponents elbow etc).

Sounds like your in the am's, so you'll be able to sneak a cortisone injection in to get you through.

It's honestly what I'd do in your place based on the info you've given me.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do and the bout.

My plans were to use the ibuprofen for just today and drop them tomorrow. I've been filling a bowl up with water from the cold tap which is freezing and keeping it in there for 10 minutes a time. Do you think I should add ice cubes to it ? Any ideas on how to compress it ?

Yes I'm in the amateur but theres no way of getting a cortisone shot as I was working today and will be on the day of my fight so there's no time. Guess it's just ice for me

Yeah definitely add ice to it. Go 10-15 mins every 2-4 hours as able.

Won the fight by unanimous decision. My thumb went back again in the first round and I felt but kept fighting. Time to leave it heal now

                  Nice man!
Sorry to hear about the thumb, continue to ice it over the next 2 days.

I forgot to say that you can use k tape, or regular athletic tape to help immobilize and compress the thumb to help with healing.
