Neck work - durability of the neck

I've been doing neck curls after training for a few months now. When I flex my neck it's like Mike Tyson's neck but unflexed it just looks like the average neck. How did Mike Tyson and many current boxers achieve a massive neck unflexed? I think it feels more durable in sparring though

Like any other muscle, you build it it will get bigger and stronger. But if you want it to look like "Evan Fields" you might need abit of what he ordered

        Neck bridging.

If you perform proper resistance training for your neck or any other skeletal muscle it will become both larger and stronger.

However, some individuals will gain larger amounts of muscle size for a given strength increase than others. The degree of size one gains for a given unit of strength increase is genetically predetermined.

All skeletal muscles become temporarily larger when "pumped".

The best you can do is train your neck properly, rest sufficiently between sessions, and provide your body with the nutrients needed to get the best out of your training sessions.

The articles below discuss training ones neck using the Nautilus shrug (Neck and Shoulder) machine, the Nautilus rotary neck machine, and the Nautilus 4-Way neck machine. While it is virtually impossible to find a Nautilus rotary neck or shrug machine in 2019, they are not necessary; one can perform shrugs using dumbbells, barbells, or other shrug machines, and a while a rotary neck machine is certainly desirable, provided one trains one's neck hard and progressively in all four directions using a 4-way neck machine, a neck harness, manual resistance or static contractions one will get almost all--if not all--of the size and strength increases obtainable.

The mistakes one sees with training on a 4-way neck machine, such as this or training with a neck harness, are generally:

            1) Moving too quickly during the exercise. In the video above, the subject is moving too quickly; set the playback to .25 speed to see how the movement should "ideally" look.

            2) Not training to failure.

            3) Not training all four directions.

            4) Not increasing the resistance as one grows larger and stronger.

Genetics. No one EVER went from having a skinny neck to a thick one w/o bulking up their entire upper-body. Isolating the neck may help a little, but is wasted time if your goal is to significantly thicken the neck. Won't happen w/o bulking up your physique, which is counter-intuitive for boxing.

Looks like a good way to really hurt yourself....

I'd agree with genetics and that it's probably not worth it unless you are also a body builder.

The OP asked how Mike Tyson trained his neck. I was just answering the question.

But neck bridging has been used by boxers and wrestlers forever.

Tyson did some fierce neck exercises. They looked brutal.
