is it worth going into? or is it overrated? There's other national tournaments other than that I'm sure of or is that the tournament that's widely recognized as THE tournament to enter... Should I wait around for it?

All tourney's are good for gaining experience.
Golden Gloves
USA
Ohio State Fair
P.A.L
Silver Mittens (for the little guys)
USA J.O. below 16yrs.
The Gloves are a week to week event, if you win you move on!
There is a qualifier, a regional then national.
Not inexpensive to go all the way. The national would usually be air fare if it exceeds traveling over 600 miles one way.

Tournament inside a tournament inside a tournament. Lol, never dealt with something like that before.
so you have 1-5 fights within your state to get to the finals? then you move onto a whole new location for another 1-5 fights? only fighting the best from each state to win nationals?

The USA has Regions that the state champs compete at.
ex; the Conn. State Champ boxing in Region One which includes Ct. Mass. R.I. Maine Ver. N.H. and up state N.Y. this was the break down when I was involved with the governing body being the USA/ABF. I would guess those states are still Region One!
What do you mean is "worth waiting" where are you going?
There is novice competition but no National for novices. Open class fighters are usually 9 bout experienced boxers. You can go straight into the Open if you think you can compete.
