Glove size for Pad/bag

Hi

I weight 185 pounds and currently using 16oz winning gloves for Pad/bag/spar. Would anyone here recommend me usiing 12oz gloves for Pads/bag and save the 16oz for sparing ? People tell me 16oz throws you off on form a bit if your starting out. Im no expert , im started boxing 1 year ago.

Yeah they kinda throw you off on technique. I felt the same way using 18oz gloves. If you don't have the physical strength in your shoulders and neck your technique will definitely suffer a little.

And the fact that those are winnings should also give you thoughts about using them on the bag.
The bag kills your gloves very quickly.


So my recommendation:

Use the 16 oz for sparring or pads to train your strength endurance.

On the bag or pads use 10oz-12oz gloves (I'd say 10oz are even better for speed)
By using lighter gloves you now don't train strength endurance but speed which is just as important.
You can however switch it up.
If you wanna train strength endurance use 16 oz gloves on the bag or pads if you wanna train for speed use 10/12oz gloves.
Some rounds on the bag with your expensive winnings won't kill them immediately

Use "bag gloves" on the heavy bag and "spar gloves" when sparring.
I used to use old tuff wear bag gloves because they weighed less than 6oz and I used hand made Shevlan 12 & 14 oz gloves for sparring. Doubt that any of those can be found in great shape now.
At 185 lbs 16oz spar gloves are fine if you have a partner who can work with you without going nuts you need fight size gloves for your defense work. Head gear and 16oz will not prepare you for defense the way 10oz fight gloves will.

If you're sparring 16oz gloves are fine.
I've never seen or used anything smaller than 16oz for sparring and neither did anyone that I've ever trained with. Sparring is designed to hone your skills and there is no need to use anything lighter than a 16oz glove.
I know if anyone used anything lighter than a 16oz glove for sparring at the USOTC or Kronk Gym, you'd get chastised, *****ed at and people wouldn't spar with you.
If you plan to compete than vary the size gloves you use for the heavy bag and pads 10-12oz gloves or 16oz gloves.
If you have no hopes of competing keep it practical, there is no need to use anything other than 16oz gloves.

hey guys appreciate all the advice , i will will go with Buakawbanchamek's advice and get a second set of 12 oz gloves to work on speed.

problem guys , my 12 oz gloves came in today . tryed them on and they feel very snug fit without hands wraps. If i wrap my hands in 180inch wraps they wont fit. If i was to use these 12oz gloves just for pads can i use them without hand wraps ?

I can't believe that...

The weight size shouldn't create any problems. For example I got 10oz gloves and they fit with wraps+ big gauze padding...

You could try stretching them by putting something big in there over night.

Otherwise yes, you can do that but I would be quite the pain in the ass to unwrap your hands when you switch your gloves during training...

Remember it's like a new pair of smart dress shoes, 1stfew wears are stiff and hurt a little, but they will give and leather soften and get more supple after a few wears.
