Hey guys Mike here, new member 34yrs old 6'3" 215lbs and been training now for about 6wks. So yeah I'm a total newbie. A question is how often are you injured during sparring. I've sparred twice now. Once with a pro, and even though I didn't hit him but a few times it went well I thought. Yesterday one of the coach's who is like a part timer (comes once a week MAYBE) wanted to spar. So we were working and I got caught with hard right to my ribs. It hurts to breath, crap, or just about anything I do. My question is, am I just being a pu*** or what? I feel like he hit me about as hard as he could. I was trying to keep it below 60%. Do y'all go 100% during sparring? I was trying to get ready for a bout in November, now I'm not sure I'll be able to make that date. Thanks in advance. Mike

I haven't sparred in a long long loooooong time, I'm in my 60's.
But I never bought into that "go easy" garbage. It always seemed like it starts out like that but the intensity always picked up.
I always sparred like I fought.
I sometimes took good shots to the ribs and had sore ribs for a week or two. So I always wore a t-shirt under a tight sweatshirt with the sleeves cut off to soften the body shots.
Guys who say they are gonna go 60% or whatever are usually lying.

As for sparring intensity at my gym we spar like we fight but within reason. We obviously aren't going in there to knock each other out. We go in there to put the things we learn, outside of the ring, to work inside of the ring. Never been hurt aside from the usual things when you spar. If you look at sparring you quickly notice there is a huge difference between a fight and a sparring match. Sparring is much slower paced and tends to focus on conditioning/fixing gaps.

[QUOTE=Mr.DagoWop;17081574]If you have pain then you have pain. Nothing pu*** about it. I'm surprised that they would put you in with a pro since you have only been boxing for 6 weeks. You must have learned have learned quick. QUOTE]
Well live in a smaller south Texas town and our gym is small. There's only one other guy who is close to my age and weight. He's about 190 maybe, but he's not been training much longer than I. Everyone else training there is a teenager between 110-140. So I guess it was out of necessity more than anything. Should I not spar with someone who is a lot more experienced than me?
