    Replacing Velcro with Laces?

anyone have experience/success/failure/tips replacing velcro gloves with laces?
ie: cutting off the velcro strap, punching holes in glove, and stringing it up with laces.

Used laced gloves before but find it more easy to use the velcro once. faster to wear and remove, no need for other people to tie the laces etc.

You can add the laces inside the gloves but you will end up with laces running around in the gloves. not comfortable.

As mentioned laces are a pita if you're looking to get in & out with no messing about
If your velcro is on its last legs use tape.
Laces would save cash on tape but trade off is they might tear leather as you tighten & you'll need a hand getting them laced

Not worth it. I occasionally make leather goods and you can't just punch holes. You need the right punch and die, the area needs to be supported for that tension or the laces will tear through the leather, and the overall wrist construction will be wrong anyhow. By the time you do it right you'll wish you had bought laced gloves.

          Hey Redd Foxx,
The lace ripping through the punched holes was my biggest concern. However, looking at my ringside lace up gloves, they don't look like they have had any special treatment/construction besides punching a hole in it, and it's still in working condition now (knuckle padding wore out lol).

I compared the area where the lace would go, with my ringside lace up, they seemed nearly identical in terms of construction.

^give those two points, do you think it would be safe to punch holes and replace with laces?

Also, what do you mean by wrist construction will be wrong anyhow?

          Other some-what irrelevant note:
I've already bought a pair of velcro gloves at a huge huge huge discount (>70% through luck/connection), in velcro. Kinda wish it was lace up instead, thats why im trying to get as much info as I can before i make the decision to place laces or not.

Thanks again redd foxx, most helpful tip so far !

edit: is drilling a hole ok instead of punching?

If it's got a backing layer of leather then it may be ok. When I mention the construction, velcro and laced gloves are each designed to optimize the tension in each fastening method (at least, in good gloves). The reason I like laced is that they are less prone to bend at the wrist because the laces evenly distribute tension throughout the wrist/forearm (and the gloves are built to support that tension). Velcro are loose around the wrist and flex there. They are often sewn and padded a little differently in that area too. While part of me says it's not work it, the bargain hunter in me says got for it and good on-ya for getting the gloves for cheap.

Leather tools are expensive but if you're going to spend a few hours doing this, it's worth dropping $15 on a punch/die so that it turns out well vs wasting all that time on something that rips. A drill or anything that leaves micro-tears will give the laces a path to start tearing right through the leather. If there is a Tandy Leather or other shop like that in your area bring in a glove and laces and they'll get you the right punch. I made my own slip bag w/ tools from the leather shop (see below). Best of luck and let us know how it works out.
