    Starting to box

    Hey, I am about 6 feet about 250 pounds I am looking at getting into the sport. I was wondering what kind of exercises I should start doing to start off. I own a heavy bag and skipping rope, thanks

    ... Are you looking to use boxing as a form of fitness? Or is there a genuine interest?

    If the latter, I would find your closest gym (a non-fitness oriented boxing gym) and start from there. The coaches and members can give you great and immediate advice, hints, and tips.


    Otherwise, your standard boxing work out looks a little like this:

    - (x3-5) rounds warming up with jump-rope
    - Stretch
    - Plyometrics (limit to only couple times a week)
    - (x3) rounds of shadowboxing
    - (x3) rounds various boxing drills, ie footwork, defense, etc
    - (x4-8) rounds heavybag
    - Calisthenics for about 10-15 minutes(I like to keep them before or after the boxing portion of a workout)
    - HIIT (nothing too crazy)
    - Core work for about 10 mins, preferably using a medicine ball
    - Stretch

    Now this is all dependent on who you ask, of course there will be individuals on this forum who'll question the inclusion of some things on there or disagree with the order. But, my philosophy is if you're working, you're working.

    Some things also you'll want to hold off on, ie plyometrics. You'll want to develop a sturdier, more comfortable boxing base before you start. The plyos you should be using will mostly cater towards boxing, so comfort with the basic movements is essential.

    Just take it easy. You're a big guy, don't go insane. Shed some lbs, get in shape. The better shape you're in the easier it is to learn and adapt to the boxing side.

        At 6 feet 250 you gonna need to inspect your diet. That extra weight on a comparitively small frame will weigh down your dynamics. So first things first..watch what you eat or even do a juice fast to shed some of your excess weight.

        Start your workouts slow and gradual... lest you suffer an injury and fall a out of your regime entirely. Low impact stuff at first I suggest. Swimming... stationary bike.. ect. Don't suggest running or plyo ect yet cuz your excess weight will pound your joints. Heavy bag is excellent.

            Ideally, At about 230-225. Then you can begin to incorporate in the high impact stuff.

            By 'low impact' I don't mean don't work hard, though. You should be sweating profusely and feeling muscle fatigue after every workout, and even at the beginning keep your workout at least a half hour long.
