    How important is acceleration in a punch

    like I can throw one punch that is really fast right off the bat, and it accelerates to an even faster speed b4 it hits the bag,

    or I can throw another that starts slowish and builds and builds and builds and just before impact its reached a high speed, and it seems to me this one hits harder than the first one

    arm vs body? lol
    when u do arm punches, it sure accelerates faster. but ur putting less weight into it.
    so its faster but less powerful.

      Not sure how an arm punch accelerates faster. Also, some people do it jerky & stiff instead of relaxed.

      Acceleration helps strike just as it would help a push (you don't push flat; you push squeezing in every last ounce of strength). There isn't much to it. The idea is to pour all your forces into a strike or a push. Acceleration isn't anything special. It is the "sensation" that you would feel when you try to push a heavy object & it won't budge no matter how much you push. Acceleration is that "no matter how much" sensation. Nothing special in it.

      As I said, the best way of hitting is to hit as if pushing. I mean striking through with acceleration, not what people commonly refer to as "push strike" which refers to "long after the impact" instead of "short after the impact".

        Here is a better expression. "Don't be stiff, jerky, tense like karate or kung fu". "Not doing such" is the relaxed acceleration. Telling you to be elastic with punches is just telling you to not do any wrong habits. It is a normal thing being kept up without a bad habit developing.

          No. You do not punch like a push. Not at all.

            Acceleration is very important. The quicker you can get your fist to top speed the quicker you can cover the distance. If you can cover distance quicker then you have more leeway when it comes to timing, combos, angles, etc.

                  think foreman punch vs a tyson punch, Tysons is fast from start to finish, sure it accelerates, but foremans its slow at the start builds and builds and only really reaches a fast speed at or just before impact or after he misses, Id say foremans punch has a more drastic acceleration if you dont include the starting speed where Tyson is miles ahead

                    F=mass x acceleration.
                    Force

                    But mass varies as you rotate your hips and pivot generating more momentum.

                    Instantaneous power. Is an important factor.
