My first day at a Boxing Gym

I signed up a few days ago and today was my first day. I basically set this week out to just work the bags and next week I'll start with a trainer.
I was there for about an hour, spent 99% of that time just pounding the heavy bag, getting the groove of hitting a bag, grappling the bag a little, & circling.

Just from this first day I realized I'm pretty good at throwing with conviction with my right from any angle (including a switch) but using my left was pretty weak at everything outside of jabbing. I do got the Garsh Hook in the works doe

Tomorrow I'll stay on the speedbag & maybe shadow in the ring a little. Also gotta use tape. Dumb of me not using it today.

Lol, my first day of sparring I'll turn into Erislandy Algieri and run around the ring flicking a jab every 5 seconds. If my trainer tells me to engage, you'll see me come in half my height CAll of Duty crouching like Bradley.

The best way to learn is correctly from the ground up. So I'd suggest you take a while to learn the proper stance and footwork before you cement any bad habits. Then re-learn the proper technique for all the punches. Then the basic combinations and defenses.

"Empty your cup" as the old masters used to say (it's worth reading that old proverb). Let go of any notion that you are doing this or that the right way. It takes twice as long to break a bad habit and re-enforce a proper one.

Your anxious, and that's good, but real boxing takes years to learn and it isn't easy. So stick with it, and be patient. Work on your conditioning by running and doing your calisthenics and once you learn the proper footwork, practice it every day. Shadow boxing in a mirror will be way more beneficial than hitting the heavy bag.

Why don't you just go straight with the trainer? He's still gonna make you start from the bottom and anything you are doing wrong now will be corrected, if left alone you create bad habits. There's little to gain from hitting the bag with no purpose and not coaching for an hour.

Lmao. Wrong attitude man. Its your first day. Reality check. You can't do **** with either hand, at all, not even a little bit. You need to check that ego. Empty your cup like the last man said.

If you can admit you don't know anything and have no ability, you will go far and one day laugh at this.

If you cling to the notion you have any skills before you've taken the long hard time to earn them, then youre going to get your ego obliterated one day in sparring and never return. Seen it many times.

Good to hear you stepped up and got into a gym. My recommendation though is you only start using equipment once you start getting instructed on how to throw punches properly from a correct stance. People are usually eager to pound a bag, but you can both hurt yourself from throwing improperly, and get accustomed real quick to bad habits that can be near impossible to break later on. Best of luck!

Trainer wasn't there yesterday. He ran me for two hours today though. Showing me the basics and such. Strikes me odd that he teaches a basic fighter style but there are so many different fighters with different styles.

That's because he doesn't know you yet. It takes time to develop someone and in the beginning he'll start from what is correct and as time goes on he'll notice your strengths and weaknesses and work from there.
