A good sprint workout > long distance jogging for me any day, but I suppose they have their advantages.
Jogging long distance means you'll make it the distance, but sprinting decides more about what you can actually output DURING the distance. Great and all that you have the legs to continue fighting, but if your shots don't have any mustard on them when you start getting winded then you're screwed despite still having some legs.
I usually try to do a mixture of both. I'll either run a hair faster than I normally do for the entire duration(6-8 miles), or every 7 minutes I'll throw in a sprint(Running at a 6:30 minute pace). Hill sprints are also fantastic because they give your legs an element of resistance.
