So who uses right hooks from the orthodox stance?

My trainer never really taught me to use it, but I gotta say it's an important punch in my repertoire. Very very useful when used and set up correctly. I've been sparring this pretty good amateur in my gym. He's 7-0. Real good fighter, orthodox guy. recently he's been imitating Ali and Sergio Martinez as far as dancing a lot and putting his hands down low.. I've noticed that mixing in right hooks in combination helps A LOT. It comes from an angle that most guys aren't really prepared for. Really helps when I'm trying to tee off on people.

    Kind of like this:

It was a pretty standard punch when I came up, but it was also said to be a very Aussie punch, whatever that means. I took that to mean simply that it was favoured here a little more for whatever reason. Whether that's true or not... Either way, it's a great way of getting behind a high guard without going to the predictable left hook and without spending rounds trying to bring it down.

One difference is that you can feint a number of different shots, all with your power hand, which you can't do with your left hand with the same versatility. It's the go to punch to loop around the ear muffs, particularly for the common gym Tysonesque guard. I used to use it a lot.

I did have a tendency to fall back on it when I got a bit wild and tired though. One of my favourite combos was a right hook, left uppercut. Had to be in very close though.

i once heard from "trainer" of mine: "there's no such thing as a right hook, don't throw it" (or something very close to that).

**** him, i left that piece of ****.

there is, and it should be thrown. i typically throw it against people with high guard, or where i have reach advantage/superior timing.

yes it leaves you open to counters. but which punch doesn't? timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing timing

oooooooooops that was completely off topic.
but to answer ur thread, yea i use it. typically against highguards/shorter reach than me. or if i somehow have superior timing

I have heard that too, that there is no such thing as a right hook. The theory being that it's too wide and too telegraphed a punch, you will be made to pay if you use it against someone that knows what they are doing.

left hook to the body is insanely wide and telegraphic IF u DONT set it up. so.... i still disapprove of the saying to not use right hooks.
if u can throw a right to the body, u can throw a right hook to the head...

The left hook is coming from the lead/front hand though. Shorter distance to travel. And you don't have to square up to throw it.

However I do agree that setting things up properly is the most important thing. A lot of the classical rules can be broken if one picks the right time and place.

True. It also comes a lot more natural to me. Hooking off of the jab is an important combo for me.

Well, it's a little different. The right hook upstairs is a kind of awkward. The right hook to the body is definitely the smoother, more natural punch. It just flows a bit easier.

perhaps your trainer needed you to PROPERLY develop the straight right (from the outside) and it's mechanics before teaching you about the right hook (on the inside).

but since you knew best you ****ed him and left that piece of ****.

Sounds to me as though your trainer had your priorities in line and in order for you to learn properly.

If you left your trainer for the reason that you stated than I would just say that every premadonna knows best...............

I throw it on occassion, for example if I have a tired opponent, I'll step around to their left and throw a right hook to the body after breaking from a clinch or if for some reason they're using their lead hand (orthodox opponent) to push my head down, lean on me, etc.

Like others have said it's kind of hard to use and can leave you open for a counter. Haven't seen many pro's use it either, aside from the Mayweather / Cotto fight where Mayweather used a version of the right hand hook to punch around Cotto's guard.
