    Best Tips for a Beginner Training

    What would be your best piece of advice be for a beginner (3 months in, 5 nights a week)? I'm being patient and trying to drill as much as possible.

    Patience will get you far. It's good to test your limits but it also increases your risk of injury. Always be aware of your bodies condition, consistency is the key to long term success.

      Thank you, will place consistency up there with patience as factors that encourage success. What is the best thing to focus on during open gym nights (no class instructor, just free time with the bags/ring etc.) Footwork drills? Defense? Hitting the bag for an hour?

            Definitely noticed how important this is. When I shoulder roll to avoid punches I usually turn too far and lose sight of my opponent for a second, but that's all it takes to get hit.

              DO.. NOT.. SHOULDER ROLL!!!

              even before reading that post i was gonna tell you to start with the basics. perhaps the most common mistake beginners make is trying to fight like an experienced boxer from day one.

              what you should do is start with the basics, learn the fundamentals and when you are a good basic boxer start adding more advanced tricks and moves. trying to build a roof before the walls are finished will send it all crashing down on your head.

              until you mastered using your footwork for defense, blocking and parrying punches, basic head movement (slipping, weaving etc), have a nearly perfect sense of distance and angles you shouldnt even think about the shoulder roll. with just 3 months training its impossible for you to have done that so leave the shoulder roll at home because as of now its holding you back.
