3 miles a day is all you need?

According to Angelo Dundee, 3 miles. No more, no less.

lol I knew you were talking about what Angelo Dundee said, I watched that secrets of boxing video recently as well.

As for the question, I think it's very debatable.

Haha yeah, I watched it a couple months ago and caught it again recently. Lots of great information young people like me could catch on to, it's just 3 miles seems low doesn't it?

Hilmer Kenty was a 15 round fighting world champion, he ran 2 miles a day. It varies depending on the individual and what they're doing in the gym............ Rockin'

It does seem pretty low to me, but then again I'm somebody who actually enjoys doing roadwork as it relaxes me, gives me crazy endurance, and helps me maintain a good weight. I guess it's like Rockin said, whatever works for that invidual; some guys can run marathons and tire after a few rounds and some guys hardly do roadwork but can spar all day. It varies.

Dundee protege Ali ran 6 miles per day.

But he was training for 15 rounds.

As far as running, sure...3 miles a day is about right.

Take in consideration that you need to train in many other ways as far as your cardio is concerned.

Also, times have changed, so fighters are training in strength and conditioning along with anaerobic and aerobic workouts.

Are your getting into fight condition you may run 8 then 6 then 5 then add in sprints then hills maybe a beach!!! You may jog 3 telephone poles then sprint 2 !!!! Theres so much more involved than just one number!! I had guys that needed more than the next guy its far to individual to make a blanket statement!!! It also has everything to do with how active the fighter is!! Years ago we did road work all the time but the gym time was cut down and sparring was no where near what they do now!! You didn't have to do all the crap in the gym because you were in shape for 10 months and fought 5 to 7 times!! Then you take some time for the body to recover!!! Today these kids box 10 or 12 aren't even tired because their effort isn't **** and then take off 5 to 7 months and have to start the proccess all over!!! just BS!!! Ray.

I feel like a very large part of it depends on the intensity of the run as well.

My trainer recently said he thought running two miles a day was okay, but I try to run 3-5. But I'm just getting into shape for the amateurs, not longer pro fights.

It depends on the individual, that is very true Rockin'. When Rocky Marciano heard that Joe Louis ran 5 miles a day, he decided to run 10, doubling his boxing hero's road work regiment.

The truly old timers (Sullivan, Fitz, Maher, Jeffries) would think nothing of running 10, 12, or 15 miles a day. Doing work at various paces. I think Sullivan and Jeffries would sprint for a stretch, walk/jog, sprint, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that interval training, done way back in 1900?

Now, these days it seems like the newer guys would rather do half the work the guys before them did...
