Hi all. I'm new here and I don't know if this has been asked before but: I have bad short sightedness and wear contact lenses, when sparring last week I lost both of my lenses. Is there any way (other than not getting punched as much) that I can get lenses to stay in? Think my eyes are too bad to spar without them, couldn't see anything without lenses, can't evensee the time on my watch without glasses/lenses... Cheers.

Sparring with contacts lenses...

I used to have a problem with my contact(s) getting knocked out usually my left eye would get knocked out the most because I had a tendency to get his with jabs more than anything. I tried for a while sparring without them which worked because my vision wasnt that bad. I cant really think of much to do honestly maybe just put some eyedrops in cause contacts have a tendency to fall out easier if you have dry eyes but aside from that corrective surgery which is costly this is what i finally got but not just for boxing and cause i couldnt wear contacts at all anymore because i had a reaction to the plastic in them. Hope this helps. Oh yea and if you are competing don't let the ref know if a lens comes out because they will stop the bout most likely cause they will assume you cant see

DON'T. I remember the first time ever boxing, my contacts just ****in flew out. Honestly, it's by far (in my opinion) to box without lenses albeit you may be at a disadvantage. I train with glasses on, and any ring work is done with glasses off.
I believe it was Fraizer who has even said he got real dizzy and headsick from boxing with contacts on in a fight.
The first time I boxed as well, I will admit I got pretty beat up and couldn't fight for my life, and after it was all said in done I got EXTREMELY dizzy and lightheaded. Since then I have never boxed with contacts in.

In the gym theres no eye wear at all! Use the gym to help strengthen your sight. Anyone wearing glasses needs an activity to do without wearing them, not sure boxing is a great alternitive but theres only one way to help your sight and thats to practice something without them. Some folks can use a lesser prescription and that can help strengthen them.
No Glases or Contacts in the GYM! Ray.

The guy could barely see 2' in front of him without corrective lenses, sparring without contacts will only get him hurt in the long run.

For some reason when I get in the ring my vision is changed/enhanced. I don't know how to explain it, but also it's gonna suck because they'll dry out and getting your head knocked around could cause movement of the contact, which won't be good.
I can really say I probably have as bad if not worse vision than this guy. Trust your senses.
By the way, I just tested it now, put on a watch on my wrist and the numbers are blurry as **** without my glasses. Can only make out the numbers when it's maybe 2-3.5 inches close to my face.Last edited by SlySlickSmooth; 03-03-2013, 10:03 PM.

Thanks for all the helpful advice. I think I will try the eye drops method and if that doesn't work I will just have to get used to sparring without using lenses, and work on my guard lol. Going to have laser surgery as soon as possible anyway, my prescription is very straight forward but like I say I'm pretty badly shortsighted. Thanks again

I had amateur boxing matches where I wore contac lenses and sparred 100s or more rounds over the years wearing them and only had a problem with them being knocked out of my eyes one time and that day my eyes were very dry. It is allowed to wear contac lenses in amateur boxing and I know there have been guys in the pros that wear them. Larry Holmes was one I remember off the top of my head.
