How prevalent is weight cutting in the amateurs?

Same day weigh-ins. Right now in my high school wrestling season and have to cut 8 or 9 lbs the day before a competition twice a week (school vs school meet on Weds, tournaments on Sats).

Thinking about pulling this off when I go back to boxing after the season. Have had 4 boxing matches so far but never cut weight and am currently 25 lbs over my boxing weight class (165 lbs, now 190 lbs). Thinking of dieting down to 175 lbs then just cutting 10 lbs before every fight. Thing is I'd imagine the fact that I'll be getting my brain rocked would make it 100x more unhealthy.

I've personally never been a fan of weight cutting in high school wrestling. I'm also not a big fan of cutting weight at your age (I'm assuming you're 15-18). Get in your best condition, eat healthy, and let your weight land where it will. When you find your best weight, then maybe start thinking about cutting.

Your body is maturing, eat clean, eat healthy. Don't start dehydrating yourself or running a high calorie deficiency.

Also concerns me that your weight class is 165 and you weight 190? You might be hitting a late growth spurt. Or you need to do some roadwork and lay off the Mountain Dew Code Red and World of Warcraft.
