    Boxing against Muay Thai guys

So for the last few months I've been doing A LOT of boxing. Last night I joined a Muay Thai class and we sparred at the end. Long story short, it was hard to close the distance, being that I'm the type of guy who likes to get on the inside and fire off some hooks and uppercuts high and low, due to the kicks. I got the **** kicked out of my left leg because of my stance, and instead of getting on the inside I had to rely on my jab, and try to time these guys coming in before I could work on landing that hook... All while getting my left leg chopped from under me. Anyone got any advice on how to position myself to really be able to minimize them kicking me, it seems as though when I'm NOT in punching range they're in kicking range, and that doesn't work for me. Of course with more Muay Thai I'll be able to deal with them better, but my hands are still A LOT better than my kicks. So, anyone with any experience in both would be helpful. Especially considering my style, it's hard to really utilize it with these guys. I don't mind if I get in and they decide to lock in a Plum, because it allows me to fire off my hooks, overhands, uppercuts, and bodyshots, but as far as standing on the inside and working the body and head, it's real hard for me to deal with.

If you want to learn how to defend against Muay Thai fighters, I suggest learning some Muay Thai. It's a bad a$$ sport, my cousin did it for a couple years. Boxing is a different sport. Muay Thai thrives on the kicks and legs man. No diss to you but it's not a very smart plan to try and "box" a people who do Muay Thai. Even if kicking isn't your thing, you should learn Muay Thai to know how to play defense and than put in your boxing when you're close enough.

are you checking the kicks? You're kind of boned dude, its sort of like "If i can get passed his bow and arrow, i can work him over with my knife". You can do it with timing, but you're not going to be able to work your way in with a jab.

Well I've done a little Muay Thai in the past, but I've always enjoyed boxing more. I guess what I should ask is, is there a way to work in the way I box with Muay Thai? Obviously I still need to work on my Muay Thai, with my past experience I'm not too bad as mixing it up, but I've becomed so accustomed to boxing, that I tend to just want to try to close the gap and fire off the to body and head with hooks and uppercuts. Sometimes I feel like if I do Muay Thai, it'll hurt my boxing game as well, that's all.

Definitely, I've further realized how short my arms were last night hahaha. It's been quite some time since I've sone any Muay Thai, so no, I barley checked any kicks. I got sweeped and kicked like a mother****er, I landed a few nice kicks of my own, but as I stated in my post above, I've been Boxing so much lately that I've had a habit of just trying to get in close and rip te body and head.

If u only use your hands against muay thai fighters then you will get the **** kicked out of you 10/10. I box and my older bro does MMA so he does a bit of kickboxing/muay thai and when we **** around and spar I don't know WTF i'm gonna do when he throws kicks.

The Plum is what some people refer to as, "The Thai CLinch." Meaning an opponent has both their hands behind your neck/head in order to pull you down before sending knees to your body or head. By saying I don't mind them locking me up, it allows me to get in close enough to fire off on their body. That is, of course making sure my position's right so I don't eat a knee... Because a knee can do A LOT more damage than a punch, not always true, but many times it is.

There is no effective way to do real damage with body punches when you're in the clinch without get the worst of it with knees and elbows. Guts will just turn you and get you off balance and start letting the knees fly.

As far as your original question....there is no real way to counter muay thai with boxing. Boxers have 2 weapons, Thai fighters have 8. I can sympathize with you though, especially about the leg kicks. I boxed for 8 years and was still active in the gym long after that. When I moved to NC Muay Thai was the only combat sport available in my area so I of course had to try it. My boxing let me hang with the beginners, but the advanced and pro fighters would eat me alive because I tried to just box. Long story short, I was sparring with a pro named Chris Clodfelter who kicked me so hard so many times in my left leg that the muscle literally atrophied over the next few weeks and would just go out from under me. This was unfortunate because this happened bout a month and a half before my only MMA fight and I couldn't do any road work.

Step in, check kick, and then go to work.
