Cant make a clinched fist with right hand

Hey guys. Ever since I damaged my hand I cannot make a correct clinched fist anymore, but I had an Xray, and was told everything was fine. I done this around 2 months ago now, and it's just not the same. I know there is something not right with my hand so it's probably not a wise idea to box on until I fix the problem. The problem is around the knuckle area, I'm unable to tuck my finger in properly to make a clinched fist but their are no sign of a breakage. What are the other possibilities or reasoning for not able to make a clinched fist? I know this is an odd question but I gather hand problems are common in the sport of Boxing so was wondering from anyone who've encountered similar problems!

I'm feeling quite down about it, because I love to box, and it seems I'm doomed at the moment.

    Thanks guys!

Go with a therapist that kind of stuff happens bro.

Some will recomend putting your fist into cold/hot water.

Putting your hand into sand or rice while you close and open your hand.

Stuff like that hope u are allright bro.

I know that sometimes if you jam a finger the ligaments can be effected and causes the joint to not have the full range of motion. This happens often in basketball. I know people who have gone to physical therapy and this helped to correct the problem and regain the rain of motion.

Assuming you don't have a swelling in your hand anymore (which can inhibit you closing your hand also), damaged tendons or a stiff damaged joint can also be the cause of your problem. X-ray wouldn't show either of those issues because it would only register bone damages. Maybe an ultrasound or MRI are due next.

Initially I thought once the swelling stopped, everything would be healed and I'd be good to go again, however, this hasn't been the case for me!

It's painful on the knuckle of my index finger, it seems really tight around there, and when I press down on the knuckle point I feel a sharp pain. The knuckle seems to the root of the problem as it seems tight and restricting me to fully close my finger.

I'm concerned more because I know the doctors treat hand injuries as a minor and say 'just rest it for a couple of weeks'! I've arranged for another appointment with my GP, so I'm going to see where I can go from here on. I mean ideally I'd like to get it looked at ASAP but I know waiting lists for ultrasound and MRI scans can more than 5 months.

This is a problem for fighters, and one I am currently dealing with it. I broke my knuckle back in January of 2010 and since then I have been talking very well known people in the boxing world. I've gone through therapy(I am now on my third time doing therapy), seen multiple specialist, had xrays and CAT scans up the ass, and now have had two surgerys(Last surgery was roughly a month ago).

My problem is the soft tissue. After the initial break and first surgery, I was only able to get my finger to bend at most 60-70 degrees. They had to go in and do a soft tissue release of the tendons and ligaments. The first surgery did not help, but this last one has helped and I am now able to make a fist again(Still could use a little bit more, but that will be corrected with therapy I hope).

I would suggest going to the orthopedics, and getting some therapy. I hope you have insurance, because it is not considered a medical necessity(Although one for someone who fights for a living).

There are a ton of stretches and exercises you can do. I am guessing you have some soft tissue damage from injuring your finger, and while you were babying it, the soft tissue hardened and this is preventing you from making the full fist. It is going to take a lot of work, and a lot of dedication.

My second surgery I was awake for the entire thing. The doctor made me make a fist mid surgery with my hand cut wide open(What a site to see.. my gah). The next day I was doing therapy and have done so 2x a week since.

Stretch it as much as you can on your own until you get into therapy.

If it's a ligament tear it'll be better in 5 months anyway. Don't force it, try keep trying to close it but if it hurts stop. Realistically though if it's a ligament you might want surgery
