Throw in a few days of jumping rope in place of the running. The heal to toe running will kill ya. With a rope you will always be on your toes. My trouble was with my knees with the running but I just started jumping rope for a 1/2 hour or so. There was slight discomfort still but no swelling like after runs. Jumping rope is great fro your cardio and will lean you up pretty good. Everyone thinks that girls are the best at skipping a rope, not true. Fighters can skip a rope like no other........Rockin'

      hill sprints?

Another quick question... will hill sprints have the same desired effect (fat burn, weight loss, getting lean) as a good half hour run? Our trainer takes us to the steepest hill in town and gets us to sprint up / walk down a set number of times. I find that it doesn't cause nearly as much discomfort as running on flat ground, so would it be worth mixing up my off days with one run, one session of skipping rope, and a session of hill sprints?

      Really appreciate all the feedback!

Running hills will make you a monster in the ring condition wise. I ran hills way more then I ran regular. But there is more than one way to run a hill.........Rockin'

Care to elaborate on the various ways to run a hill, and their benefits?

You don't want a steep hill, maybe 30'-35' slope. Just a little hill is needed. Set a cone or marker at the top and bottom.

Start out shuffling as you do in a ring (sideways), go up the hill, throw a few good shots and slide out around the marker going back down the hill. Do this for 15 minutes if you can and then face the other way and shuffle up and down for 15 minutes so you work both sides. Always at the top and bottom of the hill throw good shots and slide out with the shuffle. Then turn backwards and go up and down with punches at top and bottom. Then just run up and down, no punches for 15 minutes.

I really doubt that you'll last 15 minutes on each side so do what you can, but don't puss out just because your muscles are burning. And remember this, your legs are going to be burning really early in this exercise. Just know that every step you take in with that burning sensation is one step stronger. You will need to condition your mind to ignore the burn anyway if you want to fight, this is also a great exercise in the mind aswell.

Benifeits - Stamina, strength, speed in the legs. And you will need some strong legs to keep you upright and fighting through..........Rockin'

When I had shin splints, jumping rope actually worsened the pain, so I disagree with Rockin'.

I've only had shin splints the one-time, for a 3 week stretch, and I believe it was mainly due to the fact that I hadn't played football or trained for a couple months. So, it's all about getting over that couple weeks of pain, which should eventually subside and you can get into regular training.

The person who said has periodical shin splints must be doing something completely wrong, maybe not enough stretching before running, or maybe he's just too much of a pussy.

I always found that icing your shins worked to relieve the strain, so try that.
