    Sparring without headgear?

Personally if I am doing light sparring i feel more comfortable without headgear on. Seeing as I am never going to be a pro boxer and just enjoying competing as an amateur is this counter productive? Would be interested to see what you guys think.

I had never really thought about it until recently i noticed I can shoulder roll fairly well with no head gear on. With head gear on however I do not feel comfortable though as I cant tuck my chin in tight behind my shoulder. This is just one example however it got me thinking i do not want to develop habits that will be not as effective when I fight and have to wear head gear.

Any feedback would be much appreciated

Even pros spar with headgear so there's no point in doing it when you're an amateur and you need to fight with it on. Plus why risk getting cut or something.

But I agree it does feel better for some things. I can hold my gloves tight to my head (earmuffs) with no headgear, but when you put the headgear on you're hands are a little bit away from your head so your face is more open.

I also use to skip it for light sparring even though i know it's a bad idea. I feel more comfortable without. One time i risked getting a cauliflower ear because of that but thank god it healed perfectly.

Yeah I jumped in without my headgear one time with a younger less experienced guy just cause he was ready and the guy he was going to be sparring with was taking forever to get his stuff on.

So we're sparring and he hits me with a right hook on the ear and I thought it burst my eardrum. Hurt like hell but it went away in a few seconds and was fine after.

Haven't sparred without headgear since, just not worth risking an injury.

Yeah your both right, no real benefit. Not helping me in a fight and increases the risk of injury. Thanks guys

I sparred tonight, the headgear i have now is all busted up so i didn't use it. The guy was a pretty good puncher and he used 14 oz gloves while i had my 18 oz on.

Got a headache now, but it still felt good to get punched after about 3 months without sparring.

Gonna go a buy me one of the new rival headgear this weekend, looks pretty good.

I'd recommend using headgear with the statements above.

I've also noticed a trend with MMA gyms sparring without headgear. But they go super light.

Equilibrium, you and TS have something in common, your trainer is a piece of shiet. I wouldn't let one of my fighters get in the ring without headgear, mouthpiece or cup, safety is first. Dont matter how experienced you think you are.
