i pick those b/c to a certain extent speed, power, reach, chin are all god given, so you should make it a point to improve in every aspect you can. you would be making a mistake to only learn one style of fighting(outboxing). become complete in all areas and you cant lose.
like this guy said timing is everything. you need to sharpen your reflexes and train train train in those situations with countering. floyds been fighting like that for years so by the time he went pro it was second nature to him. you arent going to become an excellent counter puncher with blazing reflexes. you have to sharpen your reflexes in reading a persons body and knowing when a punch is coming so you can counter accordingly.

another thing is you can't stick to just outboxing at times especially when you get someone that can pressure you to get on the inside. floyd can fight in mid range and obviously he uses his shoulder roll on the inside. the art of infighting is just as important as out boxing because then you can beat anyone at any game if you master it all or at least can hold your own.

i think most people have this preconceived misconception about infighting in that it is a sluggers brawler type of style. it is true that it can be but when you look at fighters like floyd who use his out boxing sharpness, speed and reflexes on the inside, it really is an art on its own and potentially more dangerous then out boxing.

you gotta have at least a medium level of power or stronger infighters will walk through your punches.

      check out mitchell vs Katsidis

definite traits though are ring awareness, footwork and getting your head the hell out of the way when **** goes wrong

          agility ladder.
exercises like box jumps and muscle ups
          Olympic lifts
          head movement drills
shadows and pads always in the ring so you get used to the space you have

a **** ton of running.. seriously you need to be fit cos you're gonna be moving all the time or you'll get caught by a guy with short arms and a hard head

Agreed, once you gas out in the ring you can forget about trying to stay on the outside
