Building stamina for a 10k run?

Hi guys, i'm going to be doing a 10k for charity later in the year, i have reasonable stamina right no, i feel. But i want to post a competetive time in this race.

does anyone have any tips on how i can build my stamina for a race like this

By running. Only way you can do it. Throw in some swimming here and there, on your recovering days. Then go right back out and run a longer distance. Repeat process until day of the run. Obviously taking it easier as you get closer and closer to the run.

Get some good shoes too. If you want to post a competitive time, then you will have to buy high end running shoes. It's non-negotiable.

Get some good shoes for sure.

Also have you ever ran 10km before? What is the longest distance you have ran?

If you haven't done much long running, start by doing 4, then 5km and building up to 10-12kms. 10km is a long race, but make sure to keep a steady, strong pace the whole way, and push the last km out.

I'd be training about 4 times a week up till the race. Then the last 10 days or so before it, shorten your runs and reduce the amount of them, and don't run for 1-2 days before it.

Ive done 3k runs before, but this is a whole 'nother level.

I am not too concerned about it though, once i have a good training plan ill set to training and be ready when the time comes.

          Novice:

          Intermediate:

          Advanced:

or if you have more then 8 weeks and dont think you'll be able to handle the novice schedule start off with the 5k routine to build endurance.

            10k is a doddle.

Start out doing a few 3k runs first week

then 5 k runs next week

then 10k. (one months practice should be enough unless you reaaly unfit)

            I run 10k approx 3 times a week.

Time anything from 50 to 55 mins depending on wind.

My best time for me is 48mins. (nothing special that is pretty average time)

that sounds like an awesome idea if your planning on being that one in every 15,000 people that die for overly straining their heart during running events.

I did it before, felt my heart going mental, blood was pumping, I just wanted to run and run and run and run, and never stop, Mustta been bad for my body but freaking worked a treat and a one off wont hurt, the chance of dieing is very small,

If you had a coach or trainer, you'd know this mr shen.

what about the 3 guys that died in the same marathon just last year in Detroit.

normally the chances of you dieing in a running event due to heart strain is about 1 in 15,000 where as if you've already taken 8 caffeine pills its more like 1 and 100 and when death is a possibility's im not going to take those odds.
