I was told to drink gatorade/sport drinks during training so that my body doesn't burn off too much muscle. Losing weight is another story but trying to train as hard as you do and trying to maintain muscle, sipping on gatorade while training does help.

all gatorade basically does is replenish carbs, fluids and electrolytes that you lose when you sweat.

The sugars and carbs in Gatorade replenish glycogen stores after hard training sessions. Electrolytes also help with rehydration.
Sugary drinks are usually always encouraged after strenuous activity.
Not to say that water isn't important, because it is, but Gatorade and sports drinks definitely have thier place.

When doing high-intensity workouts your body will burn muscle glycogen. If you have just consumed sugar, your body will use that instead.
Post-workout, sugar replenishes your glycogen stores, and if you have some protein at the same time, the sugar will ensure that it's used by your body quicker than it otherwise would be.

Pretty much they are burning off enough that they can afford to refuel with more sugars etc, ever since i have been training intensely, i find i drink a powerade after workout, it does me no harm whatsoever. Particularly if you are building muscle, high level of fitness and doing a lot of cardio you need the extra calories, otherwise your muscles will atrophy, because there isn't enough nutrients in your system

Obviously sports drinks have their advantages, most have been mentioned. But when you train as intense and as long as a pro does each day, you have to replenish your body because you burn off so many calories (too many). That's why roach encourages manny to eat that pad thai after training which has something ridiculous like 4000 calories in it and you used to see winky always eating krispy kremes. For regular dudes not training like a pro it's different obviously because you are not losing that many calories etc.. each day so it will effect you more (but not that much to worry about, just dont drink them when your not training)

my old trainer used to MIX gatorade and water and have his fighters sip that during sparring/training
these pros burn ridiculous amounts of calories and carbs/fat storage that they really dont have to worry too much about eating too, too healthy unless they need to maintain a really low weight
i remember sprinter michael johnson talking about how he can really eat anything he wants because he trains so hard
