Hello there. I may be entering the Desert Showdown boxing tournament (novice division) in late July, but I've never had an amateur match before. I use a defensive style but I am not sure how that will fare in amateur fights. Do you guys think I would still be able to win if I'm not winging punches all day? I've been watching a lot of novice golden gloves videos and it looks like a lot of guys go %100 offense. Any advice would be appreciated.

I've never fought anywhere near the level of golden gloves but being overly defensive can be a mistake in the amatuers.
explain what you do?

I have a pretty tight guard that covers up both my body and head and I can read punches pretty well. I'm not saying I want to turtle the whole time, I just want to know if the judges generally go for the guy who throws a high number of punches regardless of if they land or if I can still win by landing cleaner shots and not throwing as many.

well psychologically for the judges the guy throwing more shots has the advantage. If the judge only scores the clean shot you'd be ok but it isnt easy to see how clean a fast shot was and judges arent always right by any stretch.
You may want to try a more offensive style for the sake of points
