i gotta drop about 5/6 lbs by saturday and i was gonna go to the sauna today to sweat off some waterweight. how much weight is safe to sweat off in one day? i was figuring that taking off 3 or 4 lbs by sweating then the rest of it by dieting and training should be fine, right?

Don't sweat out until 12-24 hours before the weigh in. Sweating out is only useful if you don't replace the lost water and staying in a dehydrated state for 3 days is dangerous and silly.
Dude, diet until saturday, don't eat after 7pm, don't eat too heavy, eat small portions, stuff like salads for lunch and dinner, oatmeal for breakfast etc
Then on friday night/early saturday morning go to the sauna and sweat out however much you need to.

You don't want to lose that water weight until the day before the weigh in. There is no reason to lose that water that early. The day before the fight eat relatively light, sweat out liquids as needed and don't drink water, every sip you take is another sip to sweat out. Also, as another poster said, don't eat or drink anything after 7pm the night before the fight. Your body will naturally lose a little bit of weight through the night due to it's natural processes. I recomended after the 7pm the night before the weigh in, eat nothing but maybe 1 or 2 peaces of toast with a light spread of peanut butter. I went through this all last week, had to drop some serious weight and it all worked out well.
Here's an article I posted in a another thread recently that could provide help.
Good luck!!

If you must. I think I did actually. The day before the fight just make sure you have it as early as possible in the day, because that's more liquid that you need to sweat out. You could have coffee the day of the fight if you wanted, just make sure it's after you make weight. I'm a huge coffee drinker haha.

whats your weight? 3-4lbs can be huge if your not a big guy. keep in mind your not a pro, you see pros usually coming in atleast 4-5lbs over the limit but they have much more time to rehydrate.
pros can have as long as 30 hours to recover weight including a nights sleep, u are not guaranteed more than 3 hours as an amateur. usually u will have a good 4-5 hours but thats still not alot of time to rehydrate too much weight.
my only loss was because i messed around with weight too much and felt extremely weak in the ring. im currently at 141lbs and will only look to cut 2lbs or so, 3lbs at most for my next fight. and im 6'3 & 1/2. huge at the weight, thought i could use it to come in heavy but its so little time to rehydrate. much better to just get down there in time, losing weight not cutting it.

In the first series of The Ultimate Fighter, Bobby Southworth cut 26lbs in a day before his fight. Wouldnt recommend anything like that though!
