Whats up everyone. I just started boxing not to long ago and i have gotten better and better each day. My striking is good but i want to focus more on my Defense. Ive looked at a lot of boxing matches on my laptop so i got an idea on how i should defend myself but i still need some some advice. Can anyone help me? It will be greatly appreciated.

keep learning and doing what your coaches tell you to do. defense will come with experience. when you shadowbox you have to imagine for instance your orthodox opponent throwing a straight and you physically slip to your left and throw a left body hook left head hook and finish it with a stright. learn to do this naturally in shadowboxing as well as on the mitts. the trainer will throw the right mitt like a straight you slip over and throw your combo. defending these needs to come natural when you see them so that as you get more rounds in sparring under your belt you learn to relax and do exactly what you do in training.

i'm no expert but what everyone knows is that you have to:
tuck in your elbows and keep your chin down.
keep your eyes on your opponent, the punches that hurt you the most are the ones you don't see coming
relax and stay calm
keep your head moving
and move your feet...
if you tie all those together, you should have a decent defense. Oh yea and when you go in putting your punches together. don't go chin first, have your front foot ahead of your head
again, i'm not an expert, just my 2 cents

Get partner and practice with each other throwing one punch at a time and defending.
So he throws a punch, you block/catch/slip/parry etc. Then you throw a punch back at him. As you get more comfortable start working in two and three punches at a ttime and get used to blocking more than one punch. Don't move around when you do it, just stand in front of each other. Do it with your headgear, mouthguard and sparring gloves so you don't get hurt. Try and work a couple rounds of this every day that you are at the gym.
We call this technical sparring. You're still hitting each other, but it's more relaxed and you're taking turns back and forth. You can practice different techniques at a more relaxed pace, and then you can begin to use on them in actual sparring, combining the defence with footwork and movement.
Alot of times guys get overwhelmed in sparring because they are trying to work on too many things at once. They're thinking about their combinations, their footwork, headmovement, their defense and they end up doing a litle bit of everything, but none of it good.
With the tech sparring you can only focus on your defence and forget about the other stuff. Then when you go in for full sparring, the defense will be better and you won't have to think about it so much. It becomes jus a natural reflex to see a punch coming and defend it.
