    Sparring

    Hello all.

I switched from Muay Thai to Boxing about a month ago and i'm loving every second of it. I'm running about 2 miles every day and look forward to training all the time.

I started sparring on Wednesday and done a few rounds with one of my mates who also trains at this gym. I didn't do too bad considering he's been boxing since he was 15 (he's now 27) and has had numerous amateur bouts, but i couldn't seem to get my shots off as quick as i can on the bag or pads. I felt alot slower in sparring. Was just wondering if anyone's got any good tips or advice for me??

    Cheers in advance!

feints and defense should be your number one concern try to force them to make a mistake and you can't develope timing on a bag but it will come.

it is going to take time, you need to be patient, you are boxing now, this is the elite, boxing is not muay thai,or kung fu,this is the top of the heap,so you are going to have to learn about sparring, this is not about slow non power kicks,or hitting the shins, this is the big ancholata, this is fast rate action,so get with it and keep punching

I started Muay Thai and then learned how to box. What has been the difference for you, outside of the fact that you can no longer use your legs, elbows, knees, and throwing your opponents down ?

ive got the same problem with throwing my straight right. whenever i throw it i get caught with a counter.
you just have to wait for the right time to throw it otherwise it leaves you wide open.

The head movement. We didn't do alot of head movement when i was training Muay Thai so it's hard to get used to it.

also watch alot of fights, not so much sluggers but masters of defense like floyd mayweather ,andre dirrel and people that lean into the punch like arther abraham.

be honest to yourself. watch other fighters on film and in the gym and see things that remind you of yourself. if you are not fast handed enough to throw rapid combinations and still hold your guard up you will have to do it another way. the main thing you should be working on is footwork and throwing proper punches. plant your feet and turn your hips into your punches. everyhting should be generated from the feet through the hand. you are going to get countered at first because it isn't second nature to you yet. that is no reason to give up. it will slow down for you and one day your hands will just flow. it is all repitition and training the mind body and soul. you need to make sure that your sparring partner is not trying to inflict pain on you during this learning experience. if he is letting go on you you need to get yourself a smarter sparring partner.

                  peace and god bless
