Dr. Fatima Cody Stanford Says Obesity Is 50-85% Genetic

    What do you think?

As a person with obesity on both sides of my family, but who keeps weight off with a disciplined diet and exercise routine, I find her comments outrageous. I do have a predisposition to obesity, but I have a choice whether I succumb to it or not.

Not sure but Fatima spelled sideways is I'ma Fat. So I take everything she say with pinch of salt.

"Weight stigma makes people believe that lifestyle is by far the biggest contributor when it comes to obesity."

Seriously though, this statement is so misleading. It isn't stigma that makes people believe that, it's the truth of the statement.

We know a family of really nice people, who are all obese. If you didn't know them and never spent time with them you might just write their obesity off as genetic. The thing is, they have every kind of the worst snacks in their house and whenever they go out odds are better that 50% that there will be some sugary drinks bought at some point.

If you are fat and your kids are fat, you should probably make an honest assessment. Maybe you will have to make more effort than the skinny bastards who live next door but a healthy weight is achievable no matter the genetic cards you were dealt, at least that's what I believe.

      Very well said.

It makes think of a friend I had in high school. He was super active and a very good athlete. The kind of guy who could shoot (a basketball) well, hit a baseball, etc., and was light on his feet even though he was 40 or 50 pounds overweight. Because he was so naturally athletic, everyone said, "Oh, he's just a big kid. He's built that way." Then I spent a weekend with he and his family at their summer cottage. They never stopped eating. It wasn't 'his build' at all.

I mean obviously genetics have a big part to play

Yeah, like when you see overweight parents and they just so happen to have an overweight kid.
