Not just from a mentality standpoint where you diet and exercise slowly to your goal weight, which inreturn trains you and acclimates you to your new eating habits so you can have a greater chance of keeping the weight off just from shear know how and practice
but also from a scientific standpoint, when you diet you crash your metabolism so not only do you not pick up any good habits form putting into practice a healthy diet and exercise program you also crashed your metabolism. Now what happens is that the metabolism you had prior to your "crash diet" that had you already overweight by 20lbs now is less efficient after your "crash diet" and when you start to eat again after your crash you will be putting on weight alot easier from lesser calories because of this inefficiency.
Its the reason people have so much trouble dieting because they approach it the wrong way. Dieting is a long practice, you have to diet slowly (to cut calories to lose weight) and exercise (to keep your metabolism working, and health) and once you reach your goal weight you have to maintain your daily expenditure of energy (your exercise and daily activities) and start eating again at maintenance or a slight surplus to get your metabolism back up and running efficiently and if you eat at a slight surplus make sure your daily expenditure is burning off that surplus so you dont start gaining weight . You cannot outrun a shi.tty diet, so 400 calories extra in a day (surplus) is about 30-40 minutes of running. So pick your poison, skip that snack or replace it with a lower calorie version or be prepared to run those miles.
