    Quite Discouraged

So I've been training for about a year now. Started going to this gym and working with the same coach and we've worked a pretty good chemistry and I've definitely gotten a lot better.

Recently I had to move farther away and I can't handle the cost of gas plus the gym fee so I mentioned it to my coach. He said to train at his house and he won't charge me.

Went there today for the first time. We had a really good session and got into talks of upcoming fights that he said he really believed I was ready for. At the end of the session he says "Hey Austin(my name), you know I charge $25 a session right?"

So I'm pretty pissed cause now I see he's in it for the money plus he flat out lied to me. It's people like this that discourage me from boxing. I have yet to find a trainer out here who isn't in it for the money.

He knows that the chances are, if you are special enough to be going up against even journeymen, you will leave him behind. So he wants the 25 now.

You should tell him to keep his word when he said he wouldn't charge you

If he lied then be hesitant around him because you don't know what else he's not telling you. That said you have to realize almost no trainer worth their salt will train you for free. Coach's have to eat and pay rent too.

This becomes more of an integriity issue though since you said the two of you have good chemistry...it's possible he forgot he told you it was free. Maybe you should remind him before severing a one year relationship. One of the most difficult things to cultivate in boxing is a relationship with your coach that has good chemistry. Observe Oscar DeLaHoya's career, trainer in trainer out (none of which trained him for free) until he found one with whom he had a stable relationship.

If you're serious about boxing don't ditch your trainer over $25...talk to him and be straight about your concerns. As you progress you will learn that the most important person in your camp (besides you) is your coach, and if you can't talk to him over a petty money dispute it's not going to get easier if you just bolt to a new gym.

You bring up some very good points and yeah it would be hard for me to find a new coach/trainer that would have good chemistry with me.

But at the same time, trust was broken. And that's a hard thing to rebuild. But I have been considering going back.
