    Sparring Vid

Guys, here's some footage of me doing some light sparring - I'm in the red headguard. It gets a bit busier in the last round.

I can see already my jab is poor and my hands are too low.

    Any comments appreciated.

good ****.. from what i can see u probably rent much experienced but u move well with your head .. but yeah u need to keep those hands high cuz especially at your weight class.. and your punches are just arm punches .. try to sit down a bit more and turn the body .. practice on the bag and shadowboing.. practice makes perfect

try to keep your hands at your chin and shoot your punches from the face and bring it right back dont wing the shots and try to load up on them.. i wuld recommend working this on he bag just sitting down on your shots and punching from the face and turning your body into the punches.. its working for me

my advice would be to tuck your chin in a little bit more and pick your hands up.

and also, the first guy was trying to catch you with a straight shot on your way in, just try to use a simple catch and counter to discourage him from doing that. other than that you looked good

You should attack the body a lil bit more and bob and wheave when the guy is taller than you and has a good jab.

In the video you look slow. Although I suspect that you will never become fast, this is unusually slow and the explanation has to be the context of so called "light sparring". The problem with light sparring is that you can't simulate the conditions which you will experience against a tough opponent who is trying to hurt you. It is difficult to learn how to effectively snap the jab, unless you actually do it against a moving target.

You are already aware that your technique is flawed so we don't really need to carp on about that. At some point you just have to start forcing yourself to do it. One thing you should do is more defensive drills with your coach or a training partner. As yet you still haven't developed the instincts to make the right moves at the right time. Showing angles doesn't happen by accident. Boxing is like a chess game, for every move there is a counter-move. But you will never learn it until you do the drills over and over until they become a part of you. It is what soldiers do in the army and there has to be a reason for it.

Doesn't look like you are in boxing shape. Once you get in better condition, and probably a lighter weight, you will find that you not only feel stronger but faster. How you feel very often affects how you perform.

            cheers for the comments.

as potatoes says, i'm not in boxing shape - although believe it or not, i've actually lost over 30KG in the last year or so (I'm now just over 100KG), so I'm definitely on the way down to cruiser or light-heavy.

i do look slow. i know i can punch faster than that - i punch a lot faster than that on pads - just not sure why i'm not doing it in the ring.

by the way, i've been boxing for 8 months, sparring for 2-3 months.

            lots to work on...

              Just my $0.02

              the bad:
              - waaaaay flat=footed. keep your weight on your toes a bit more and you'll find your footwork much quicker
              - when you jab.you kinda lean your head back. In fact I would consider head movement to be a major issue, your style looks almost european with your lack of head movement. You would weave for a couple seconds, but then stop when you or he would throw. Work more on your head not being in the same place after you punch. Jay had a lot of good points about the chin.
-your jab needs all kinda work too. very pawing, no snap; i think that's mainly what made you look slow.
-higher guard like other guys said

              the good:
-You had a few good moments around the 5 min mark where it looked like you were moving your head a bit
              - you look like you can hit like a mule
              - nice use of combos & upper cuts when the other guy would shell
              - I thought you were pretty accurate, you caught him with some good ones.
              - you may not be in "boxing shape" but you didn't look that tired at the end, especially not for a heavyweight

A quick look at the vid. You are moving only in one direction, change it up.
                Your hands are too low.
Your right foot is at right angles and it looks like you are dragging the right leg along like a dead weight.
Point your right foot more forward facing, about 45 degrees, dont be so flat footed be more on the ball on the feet, so you can move lighter and faster.
Keep practising and you will get better.

Your opponent is circling to his left (your right) continuously. You are also circling to your left which means your just following him around chasing him. Move to the right and cut the ring off to keep him infront of you. This will allow you to control the center of the ring and will help keep you away form the ropes.
