if getting cut is "your aim" then I wouldnt recommend protein atall. It will do the opposite, for getting cut you need to sort out your diet and do plenty of cardio like you said. Protein wont help you cut.

Protein will help maintain your muscle but you may or may not need protein powder to do that depending on your diet, if your diet is fine then it will hinder you. First of all:

Have you been at this weight consistantly for the last 2 months at least? do you train often?

If youve been at that weight for the last 2 months then you are currently eating enough calories and such to maintain your body mass (fat and all). Theres 3 easy things you can do. 1) increase amount of training to burn more calories and fat/manage the type of training to get the results you want (anaerobic to increase metabolism, aerobic to directly burn fat, weights to help maintain muscle) 2) slightly decrease how much you eat because currently your maintaining what you have so a little less food = a little less you :P 3) clean up your diet, what you eat has as much and/or more effect than how much you eat on body composition

        Example:
I've been at 165 for about 8 months and I kind of have a little diet going on (not a weight loss diet, a diet is just what you eat in a day lol a diet could be twinkies and butter!!) I always eat 2 bowls of cereal for breakfast, after my morning workout I grab some kind of juice like orange juice, a pita from pita pit for lunch (double meat, chicken breast) or two sandwhiches with a buttload of meat, a good sized supper supper (whatever gets cooked, its usually pretty healthy since my family is trying to be healthy) and another small meal at about 9pm consisting of whatever I can find but its usually left overs & 2 glasses of milk. Since Ive been at 165 for months I know that any small change will lead to a decrease in some kind of mass (fat or muscle) so I can just decrease or change what I eat in any particular meal without it being a huge issue. When Im low on money and I need to drop weight I just eat 1 bowl of cereal for breakfast instead of two or I just chug down some milk. If I have money then my breakfast or 9pm meal is a protein shake/bar, Im getting more protein (to hold onto muscle) and less carbs/fat/calories (to help lose fat), coupled with my training...I get lean as ****. In my case its not practical to train any more and I already eat clean so food intake is where I have to focus my attention. Hope this helps. I could give another example if needed.

Whats with people applying the term bodybuilder to anything that is about aesthetics. 99% of the people that go to gyms go there to look good naked (or at least not be a blob) and I sure as hell wouldnt call them bodybuilders...except for the bodybuilders of course.

Besides a boxer should know how to drop weight ways other than drying out....

work out with light weights ONLY. Do more reparations on the light weights will rip you 10x faster than trying to use power lifts. Calastedics like push ups crunches and dips. Every other day....the best protein shake out there right now is Syntha 6 or (six) . Google it. It taste better than any of them and is booming in the gyms.

Protein does the opposite? LOL Proteins are the building blocks of muscle... and you want muscle, if you wanna be ripped...

                  More muscle, less fat.

Good point, Landon. To be honest, if a boxer is busting his ass in the gym and has a decent diet, he will have good body composition that is surely more aesthetically pleasing than the average joe. He won't have huge pecs and outrageous biceps, but he will appear "ripped".
