14oz or 16oz in sparring....

My question is some of the guys I sparr with, namely a local pro, uses 14 oz gloves when we sparr, while I use 16 oz. I don't know weather to drop down to 14 oz so he does not have a slight advantage or weather I should stick with 16oz for my benefit of stamina. Thanks for checking this thread out.

I would probably go to 14s as well. Here in Ecuador we use 12oz gloves for sparring.

I think I agree with 14s as well.

I used to be a huge advocate for sparring with heavier gloves till I dropped down to fight gloves and realized I had no defense - the bigger bulkier gloves provided me with an unrealistic shield.

If you're worried about busting up your sparring partners, I would try something like the Top Ten sparring gloves from Totiro-usa.com which is a 16 ounce glove that's about the same size as fight gloves.

Also, softer gloves like IMF Tech or Winning would be nicer on your sparring partners as well. An IMF or Winning 14 will have better padding than a 16 ounce Reyes & probably even a 16 ounce Grant.

Yeah I was concerned about protecting my hands as well as my sparring partner, but I don't think he is as concerned so I think I will start using 14's. He was using the el cheapo everlasts which have no padding or hand protection.

good gawd i hate those gloves
and EVERYBODY uses them
when i see folks trying to spar me with them, half the time i'll make sure i'm wearing my grant super bag gloves to even the playing field a little.

I have grant campeon bag gloves but use Everlast Proffesional Lace up 16oz to sparr.

Heres the gloves most of us use here, they are handmade by the sons of the coach in a small workshop near the gym, I think I paid $35 or $40 or so new if I can remember right. Leather construction, 12 oz, velcro cuff.

I also find it hard to do clean punching on the inside with 16s cuz they are so fat. A lot of your punches are stifled
