Both jabs are effective in different circumstances. If you are taller and have reach, it is a good idea not to step with the jab, just snap it out there. If you are shorter, stepping with your jab is a must.

The great thing about the jab is that reach is NEVER a factor. Someone can have 8 inches of reach on you and you can still jab them effectively. By stepping with your jab you effectively extend your reach indefinitely.

I usually don't step in with my jab, I have pretty long reach so I just use my jab to set other shots up and keep my oppenent away.

If you are out of rang of course you need to step in. But you don't need to step in if he comes looking for you.

I know he's a great trainer and i'm willing to give his style a shot, but is it really all that wise to step into a jab?

I find this to be a very strange analysis, and asking if you should step into a jab is a very strange question coming from somebody who claims to have had 4 years experience. Is your new coach attempting to impose a new style on you? Is he teaching you things you never learned properly in the first place? Is he attempting to bring out the full potential of your natural style?
