    practicing dodging?

hey everyone im new to this forum and pretty much new to boxing. i got a punching bag a week and a half ago after a long time of wanting one.. never had the space until now. ive always been sort of into boxing, like if it was on tv i would watch that and i always thought it was fun to box friends, so i decided i would try to get more into it. i found a boxing gym near me (seattle) that im going to try to go to and do the class things because i dont know much about technique.. just what my friend has taught me

i just wanted to introduce myself... here's my question

how can i get faster and slip punches better? i mean is there anything i can do to get really fast and agile?

sorry im a bit short for words... i havent slept tonight"peeleft:

first of all, don't call it dodging.

you can slip a punch, weave (slip to one side and "weave under a punch to the other side), or fade (kind of like a shoulder roll). then of course you'll have to learn how to move properly and thats presupposing your stance is correct, which if you've never worked with a trainer, it probably isn't...

Because these techniques are intricate, It would be futile for me to try and write out instructions on how to do each properly... the best advice for you is to get to the best boxing gym in your area asap. even if you don't stick to the boxing gym (which you should), at least you can learn some fundamentals to work on instead of practicing things wrong form the get-go.

Here are some basic tips though. When punching the heavy bag, slip after your punches in the direction of your punches trajectory. If you're orthodox, your left jab goes from your left to right, so follow the jab with a slip to your right (dont punch into the slip. bring back your hand to high guard BEFORE slipping). your right cross goes from right to left, so follow it with a slip left. you can start by practicing 1-slip right, 2-slip left and 1,2- slip left. that will get you started, but once again, you need someone to work with you cause if you are learning by yourself, it is a guarantee that you will be doing things wrong, from your slip technique, to not bringing your hands back properly, to your stance, to your punching technique (let alone putting that all together)....

also, slipping following your own punch is a good start, but eventually you want to be able to slip based on whats coming at you, not based on what you throw. you should have the capacity to slip right OR left after a jab. the reason you practice it the first way is just so you can get used to the flow of boxing (every movement puts you in position for another movement) and get the slipping fundamentals down so that the movement becomes second nature....

heres a easy one start with a basketball or soccer ball, get 10 feet from the wall and throw the ball to the wall for 10mintues then, get 5 feet an do it for 10 mintues, then start using a smaller an smaller ball once you get use to the big ball and you catch it everytime, help me a lot, and if you want to know a way of keeping your chin down is when your shadow boxing put a tennis ball under your chin and hold it there and dont let it fall
