Its true, football is nowhere near as taxing as boxing but its ok since it builds some good explosive power in your legs. But usually the longest youll run is for like 15 seconds in a game so youll need to build endurance in your legs. Try this instead of running once in a while, distance running will hurt your football game but this will help you reach a happy in between (if your concerned about football):
sprint 25m, jog (preferably) or walk back
sprint 50m, jog or walk back
sprint 100m, jog or walk back
sprint 200m, jog or walk back
sprint 400m, jog or walk back
sprint 400m, jog or walk back
sprint 200m, jog or walk back
.....back down to 25m
(no rest at all)
it adds up to almost a mile of sprints and jogging but it will kick your ass lol you can even add some (pushup, jumping) burpees after each sprint to kick your ass even more, or clapping pushups. This is a workout I love but hate at the same time. My head usually hurts lol
