    killer instinct

Hi I am a girl boxer and I am going to fight this Saturday (amateur). My problem is that I can't be mean. They say boxing is 99% mental. I am pretty competitive, but I don't have so called killer instinct. (or not enough)
I have a fear now that I might lose the fight because I am mentally not prepared. How can I get over it? Or is this stage fright before the fight?
    Please help!

Once you get into the first you'll settle down. Its not always good to be overly aggressive when getting in the ring. You'll get winded way too fast, also you'll throw wild punches and have a chance of being caught. I'd rather be a smart thinker then someone that goes in there that wants to brutalize you. Patient aggression is the key.Which means when you find that good opening, all that aggression will come out.Once it closes you can calm your senses again.

yo.. first of all good luck...

if u fear u wil lose bcuz ur not mentally prepared. thats when u need to sitdown and prepare urself mentally...

u have to get into ur own head... go back to what made u start boxing... think about the bad things in life that make boxing so good.. all the things that piss u off in life, the ppl that did u wrong... all the negative. should drive u enough to not care to take a punch, and to get a little pissed off / mean

u gotta go into each fight thinking "im gunna ****in destroy this person, they arent gunna even TOUCH me"

u gotta be confident. thats the key.. and get pumped up first so u aint worried about getting hit...

then go in there. keep ur hands up.. and concentrate on getting punches off and working ur game plan.. if the game plan aint working, thats when u use ur mental smarts and find a new game plan on the spot that can win

      good luck

        Watch Rocky,,,,,

Don't get mad before your match. Just stay as relaxed as possible. Nerves will jack you up. Just get in there, remember what it i you worked on, and execute your game plan.

          Thanks!!

          Thank you, guys!
I printed out your guys advice. Each is slightly different, but I think I can manage a few more days. I got by, so my concentration is somewhat gone. Staying focus is very hard. I only have 2 more competitions - this one and golden gloves for I am going to be 34 next year. So I should do my best so that i won't regret. Thanks again. Yeah, I will rent Rocky. Good advice.

when u actually get hit in the face 4 the first time....ull get mean trust me. That lets u know if boxing is 5 u or not...like Mike Tyson said "everybody has a plan until they get hit in the mouth"

                  Testimony, hopefully =\

Hopefully this reply isn't coming too late to do any good, and good luck indeed!! For me the first time I fought and had to overcome nerves / figure out how to get any kind of fighter or killer instinct I was completely lost. No matter how much my coach told me to pray, meditate, focus , etc I was just not getting it. The above poster who said something to the effect of "once you get hit"...that's honestly what it took for me. The first time you take a solid crack and your internalize it that "hey, this isn't sparring, this is a fight!" it should take the nerves off right away, and all those long, taxing hours of preparation will pay off.

When I was in my first smoker and I got hit with a solid shot, it was something on the right side of my head. I was so tense and unfocused I didn't see it coming. I remember losing my balance and stumbling for what seemed like a minute. Once my head cleared I felt like Shane Mosely (at the time his was the style I was hoping to adopt ~). I was able to focus, I wanted not only to land punches but I wanted to take my opponents heart. I couldn't even remember feeling tired until three rounds later when the fight was over. All that to say it's normal for some not to have that instinct prior to being in the ring, in a fight, and really getting rocked. If the first truly solid shot doesn't bring out the fire inside you, then it may be time for something else.

                    hell yes!!

i think once u get in the ring and take in the atmosphere and realize ur opponent is tryin to take ur head off, u'll be jus fine in getting mean. jus make sure u execute ur game plan like everyone else said, and use ur mind when in there. be smarter, and u will win.
