    I hate my right!

So after training for months I finally started sparring a little heavier with my trainer and some other guys at the gym. I videotaped it and I'll try to get it up.

When I watched it, I have to say I liked what I saw as far as movement and slipping, head movement, jabbing etc. However everytime I through a right hand it looked like a little ***** slapping punch. I KNOW when I hit the heavy bag its not like that but I guess I do it when I'm sparring.

Any advice? I really just have to snap it straight from the shoulder and twist it I guess but it really doesn't look good on video.

Remember, I'm 40 and I just started this year but I am having fun and I've gotten myself into great shape. I'm 6' and went from 189 to 159 so there are no other guys my age that my trainer wants to put me in with so I'm always against younger guys, which sucks, but its good practice I guess.

    Thanks,

    Mike

work the heavy bag a couple rounds with just throwing the right hand, nothing else. do the same on the double end bag and the mitts with ur trainer. spar slower til u get the technique and range of the punch down. keep practicing and gradually it will improve...

    good luck.

it may be totally incorrect form, but i notice that if i step foward with my right foot, slightly squaring up with my hips when i throw a right, it feels much more powerful.

a good dominant hand punch has more thinking to it then a jab or even a hook or uppercut (which are defined by their form in the first place). Make sure your almost "un-corking" your right (dominant) straight. It comes up, then out, with the hand turning over. Focus on that becoming one, swift motion and you'll see an upgrade in the punch. It's not just a jab, it's your biggest weapon (in most cases). up, out, over. up, out, over. each one of those movements adds power and SPEED to the punch as your engaging more tendons, muscles, nerves, etc..

If it works for you I think its ok to do that (the stepping thing)? Anyone disagree?
