    Update: Sparring a lot now.

Well i joined this forum with some questions early on and you guys were helpful. I'm 39 and started a boxing for fitness type class. About 6 months ago I ended up going to a real boxing gym and training with a trainer as well. Mitts, heavy bag, medicine balls, rope, sparring etc.

Well now I've been in there with a bunch of different guys. Here is my question? At first I started just sparring with my trainer and he would definitely hit me but I still felt like I was getting better.

Then I was sparring guys my age but that were heavier (I'm 6' and since I started this I went from 187 to 157) and I stilll felt pretty good but it definitely was not as controlled.

Now lately I have been going against 20 year olds with experience and now I'm getting discouraged. I'm having trouble getting close to pull off my combinations and I'm getting counterpunched what feels like at will. Friday night I took two huge (well they felt huge) straight rights right into my face. Yukk!! THe week before I fought a 19 year old who was lighter than me but is 5-0 as an amateur and he hit me with a left hook and my legs stopped working for a second. I'm not a ***** and I don't mind getting cracked once in a while but what kind of copmetition should I be sparring against? Being that I own my own business and not looking to compete I don't need to be getting wallopped 3x a week.

I guess my question is, do you guys go through discouraging times. My trainer says I'm doing great and he is giving me better and better competition. He says if I fought inexperienced guys my own weight all the time it would be a cakewalk and I wouldn't learn anything. I believe him but getting beat up is frigging discouraging.

well, the simple answer is train harder and work more on defense and everything else u have problems with. those young dudes are gonna try and jus tire u out with movement and fast punches and stuff, so try to cut the ring off and work the body more. move ur head more and keep ur hands up. i spar with some oldheads and they give me a pretty good workout, so u jus gotta work out harder. tell ur trainer ur gettin hit too much and to work more on D with u. post some vids if u can...

Awesome. This is what I feel inside. I have to work on defense. These young guys with experience are always moving, slipping, and rolling and I feel like I am just standing there like a heavyweight power puncher. Meanwhile I am in good shape and have a lot of endurance and do not have a lot of power. So I have to move more.

Plus, hands up, cut off the ring and work the body. All good advice. Thank you.
