I get that, too. Weird for me, lemme tell ya.
A few days ago, some of the guys in my band (I play saxophone in a band) were shucking and jiving with me about my fight. One of the members, who is an egotist and kind of a loudmouth, starts going off about how that isn't real fighting, he and I ought to step outside and he'll "show me something." He had been a semi-pro ballplayer after college and considers himself to still be something of an athlete.
He was actually asking me to go outside for a friendly punch-up.
Before I could even talk him down, one of the guys who'd been at my exhibition bout spoke up: "Dude, are you insane? He (pointing to me) would kick. Your. Ass." He said those last three words that slowly: Kick. Your. Ass.
"He's right," said another guy. "He'd **** you up."
"Yeah, Chris, you're gonna get hurt. Don't do this, man. Take it back, say you're sorry."
"Look," I said, "This is a ****** idea. Come to the gym sometime, and we'll go Waltzing Matilda. I'd love to. But I'm not going to fight you. Ever."
I am, by and large, a gentle soul. I was, until very recently, an ordained deacon in the Presbyterian church. I hate fighting. (I LOVE boxing, but I hate fighting. Figure that one out.) On top of that, I don't box very well, yet.
But what was amazing was this: My fights throughout my life have for the most part been accompanied by knots of people urging my adversary to kick my ass, and my adversary knowing it was an easy feat.
This was the first time -- THE FIRST TIME -- that a group of people has ever talked someone OUT of fighting me, for fear that HE might get hurt.
That, in and of itself -- all Christian mercy and humility aside -- feels amazing.
I am truly a different man now than I was two years ago.

I got 20 times the respect for people who box and people who do MMA. I know of 2 MMA kids that were in my math class. These guys trained 4-5 times a week and didn't have a damn LICK on them. I knew this boxer and buddy would roll up with cuts over his temple and swollen eye/eyebrow's all the damn time. THe 2 sports dont compare when it comes to toughness. Sorry MMA fanboys.

I think I'm going to add Judo to my repertoire next year. Throwing people into the ground is FUN. And it's only gay if you smile.

****ing kids these days!
if you don't participate, then as you do not ****ing know.
and for everybody else, i'm not dissing boxing and you know that. boxing is part of mma - so dissing mma in at least one sense is dissing boxing. mma is not a style, but a discipline of training more than one style of combat with a strong emphasis on sport fighting.
and you guys know i know what i'm talking about.
