at 16, chunky and interested...it would probably be best to go ahead and begin and try to lose weight WHILE learning to box...
not sure if you have the resouces to join a gym or find a trainer...but you could start by incorporating Boxing training into a daily workout...if you have a basement or garage that you could put a bag in...buy some gloves to get used to the extra weight on your hands and do some boxing workouts...shadow boxing, hitting the bag...think about technique..get a mirror and watch yourself punch too...sometimes internet boys will respond to that with smark remarks...but in the end, guys would and do watch themselves train (just like guys flex in the mirror)...it helps to see how you're punching...to see how low you are holding your hands...to see how long you punch...to see your footwork...to see how straight your punches are...etc...yes you can feel all of that...but it helps to see it...just like some singers sing and think they can sing until they actually hear themselves...same with watching yourself throwing punches
also do the cardio and begin eating healthy...
that is just basic stuff to get you started if you don't have the ability to join/find/fund a gym/trainer right now...
cannot hurt either way to actually get your arms moving on your own time...also watching some boxing...see little things that fighters do...practice them...you may end up practicing certain moves, slips, combinations, etc...but when you actually begin to get into it, your body and mind will act on its own and do little moves here and there that is natural for you...but it doesn't hurt to try to learn from the pros...
also see if you can find a friend to buy gloves, mouthpiece and headgear with...find somewhere...whether outside or inside/basement/garage where you two can spar...nothing like having a live body in front of you punching back...and don't use it as a chance to kill your friend...use it as a chance to work on things...meaning at your age, you don't necessarily have to hit him hard or win rounds...use that friendly sparring just to get used to having a live body in front of you and most of all to see how you mentally and physically react to someone punching at you....
just start simple like that...you have time...things will come naturally...you may not be ready to jump in with a trainer from the start right now...you may so be..who knows...but I'd start simple and get those hands and brain moving....Last edited by TyrantT316; 02-03-2007, 09:54 PM.

Are you athletic as of now? Do you compete in any other sports? Get a bag, and hit the bag and learn how to throw punches first, while doing that, try to eat healthy, and start running and trying to slim down before joining a gym.
