Mike Tyson was a master at that. He came in too close for the taller guys and pummeled them in.

Eh.. my experience is that the taller guys have more power as well.. as long as you know how to use your feet and leverage. I see more amateur fights being dictated by the fighter who stays on the outside.. rocking short and stalky kids with jabs and straight rights then move. Just my experience. ( Most of the fighters in my area are Mexican though.. actually about 80% so they are all naturally small )

I'm a tall fighter, and I take a lot of body shots so I'm used to it. There has been people starting threads about whether or not it is better to be a tall lanky fighter or a short stocky fighter.

These threads are ****** because good fighters are good fighters, regardless of physical stature. When a tall guy and a short guy fight either the tall guy is going to keep him at range or the short guy will find his way inside, which happens just depends on who is the more skilled, smart, and conditioned guy.

I'm going off topic since this thread wasn't about this though.

My answer to this thread is that I do find some short guys to be very solid and compact, and yes a bit physically stronger than me. But just because they are physically stronger that does not make them a bigger puncher, because long wiry muscles are excellent for punching power, if not as good for pushing weight around.

yeah, the laws of physics dictate that the taller man will have more power (based on momentum and leverage) but in reality because short fighters of the same weight will have more core muscle they are generally stonger up close, and genetically they are likely to have more fast twitch (type 2b) muscle fibres which makes them more powerful.
Of course, for shorter guys like me u gotta have the skills to land those hands, so if ur not very skilled or co-ordinated ur best off being tall

Uh.. first of all, fast twitch muscles have nothing to do with height. It has to do with how your body reacts.. which are either trained or are more natural. Secondly, it takes just as much skill to be an outside boxer then it is to be an inside boxer. Outside boxers are always moving, so **** off about the coordinated peice. Our jabs have to be crisp and clean, something most close fighters don't bother trying to perfect because if we have a slow and podding jab you mother ****ers walk through it. Our straight rights have to be right ont he nose and we have to duck under your ****** hooks that you happen to throw 90 times a minute.

k, that was unnecessarily heated. Fast twitch fibres dont have anything to do with height ur right, but mesomorphic people are short, and mesomorphs tend to have a lot of fast twitch fibres. U cant train the amount of fast twitch fibres you have, you can only increase the size of the individual fibres with training, the ratio of muscle fibre types cant be changed (K.Wesson, 2005, Sport and PE)
i didnt say all tall fighters are uncoordinated, i said its an advantage to be tall IF your uncoordinated, as you can still land punches, whereas if your short and uncoordinated u cant land at all.

I've seen uncoordinated tall people and uncoordinated short people.. um the only thing the uncoordinated short person has to do is put his gloves up and move forward. The tall people has to move constantly from side to side and backwards and seeing as how he's uncoordinated - he's gunna trip. I don't understand why being tall and uncoordinated would be an advantage over being short and uncoordinated.
