is it about money? and why did they retire early? trinidad, after losing to hopkins in 2001, has decided not to fight anymore! and now he's back and fighting again. what do you think are possible reasons why these fighters, eventhough some are old enough and they are not competitive anymore like holmes and bowe--

I think Titos loss to Hopkins shook him up a little and he needed some time off. I think you could see that in is fight with Charifi after his loos to Hopkins. He didnt look the same and appeared a little scared to get hit.
Now that Tito had some time off, I think hes ready to go again and I think we saw that last Saturday. I think his comeback in particular has to with a combination of money, pride and legacy.

Money....boredom....EGO.
Fighters cannot accept that they can't hang with the elite anymore.
They feel good, & sharp, in the gym.
They look at the other fighters out there & refuse to believe the youngins can beat them.
They are thinking, of course, of being at their best.....& that's what fools them.

Ray Leonard came out of retirement claiming it was not for the money; he wanted to face Hagler because he was convinced he could beat Hagler after watching Hagler take on John Mugabe.
Joe Louis came back because the IRS was after him.
Foreman returned because he, then, said he needed the money to sustain his ministry (he was a preacher).
Larry Holmes emerged from retirement and gave varied reasons; nearly as many reasons as he had interviews-- none of those reasons, he insisted, had anything to do with money.
Reports from the Duran inner circle indicate that Duran had kept on fighting way, way, way past his prime because he needed the money to sustain the lifestyle he had become accustomed to.
Hearns periodically made noises to return because he said he felt the itch.
There seems to be nearly as many reasons to come back as there are retired fighters. Sadly, there are also active fighters who appear to go about their business as if they have already retired!
Anyway, only Rocky Marciano stayed retired. But then, there are speculations that had he not died in a plane crash soon after hanging up his gloves he would have re-entered the ring. They say the ring's lure is too strong for any former pug to resist.Last edited by grayfist; 10-08-2004, 12:16 AM.

very well said. there are different reasons for different fighters. i think however that most of is that it is hard for them to watch a fighter that they feel that they could beat. problem is that they just don't have it like they used to in most cases. i never once thought that we had seen the end of trinidad.
i knew he would come back. lord knows he is good enough and young enough to do it.
