Comments Thread For: Kell Brook Motivated To Do a 'Calzaghe-Lacy' Job on Crawford

I read it as Kell referencing the fact that Jeff Lacy was favourite v Joe Calzaghe and stating that if he were to beat Bud then their victories would be similarly remarkable. There's nothing in this article that suggests to me that Kell imagines he has a hope of schooling Bud in the manner that Joe beat Jeff. I think Kell is actually complimenting Bud in that he's saying that Bud is such a skilled and intelligent fighter that to beat him would be a career defining achievement. This can't really be denied can it? I'm from the UK and whilst I give Kell a chance, it'll be a massive upset if he pulls it off.
As for JC V JL, The reality is that Lacy was over-hyped and never had the tools to deal with Joe. How he was favoured to win that fight I'll never understand. I do know that there was a perception in the UK that Calzaghe struggled to land fights against the top U.S. fighters because from a US perspective he had no name value and wasn't a draw. The UK perspective on this was that Joe was perceived as being high risk low reward and the top US fighters would rather swerve him than risk losing to him. Hence it was felt Lacy was being sent over to put Joe in his place. We all know how that went.
Whilst it's true RJJ & BHop were past their prime when JC fought them, they were Joe's last fights, not Roy's or Bernard's. I get that Calzaghe was the younger man, but his style as a volume puncher meant his hands were wrecked by that point. Also, he's only a couple of years younger than RJJ. Yes, he had 8 years in BHop, but BHop is one of those enigma's when you talk of a fighter's longevity.

[QUOTE=whollisboxing;20882619]Kessler was seen as his top challenger at the time and Calzaghe beat him clean. That's really all you can ask for from the consensus #1 guy, to beat the consensus #2 guy decisively.[/QUOTEok thats all well and good but calzaghe had 20 odd domestic defenses of his world title fighting bin men and cab drivers
He stepped up went life and death with kessler then fought a way past it jones and hopkins back to back
His record is padded as hell
