Comments Thread For: Teofimo Lopez Explains Emotional ESPN Interview Regarding Relationship With Dad

LAS VEGAS They hugged and talked it out. Teofimo Lopez and his father say they have moved on from the issue that made the IBF lightweight champion extremely emotional during an interview with ESPN that aired this week. Lopez surprisingly stated that his relationship with his father is "not the same" and that he is "hurt" because he wanted Teofimo Sr. to be more father than trainer sometimes.

Jesus, Sr basically said Teo is crazy for saying that ****. He didn’t take any responsibility for something that was clearly bothering Teo.

Real talk. Typical ignorant, narcissistic dad tryna control his kid bc of his clear addiction to the limelight and the money he brings in. Ain't nobody tryna turn anybody against anybody. That's just a manipulative psycho tactic that people use to try to control others. Probably a matter of time before Jr. grows into his own man and realizes his old man just see him as a meal ticket now and just decides to go his own way. Old man is just much more trouble than he's worth.

Not trolling - this whole thing reeks of a father catching his son doing some downlow sh_t and is now forcing him to 'man up'.

Some strange sh_t I think, why is a pro boxer crying like that? Not judging just wondering. May the better man win.

I don't buy that excuse from either of them. You don't cry in front of a video camera, repeat it's not the same, and lament your lack of a relationship with your father, unless there's a real problem. Teofimo may love his father, but he doesn't like his father. His father is a resentful old man, who enjoys starting trouble. His son is fully aware of it, and he's picked up some of his fathers negative traits. I don't know how these two haven't gotten themselves into some serious altercation in Brooklyn. Lomanchenko says that in his country you can't talk trash without there being some consequences. That's the same story in any country around the world. If you want people to respect you, you must respect people.

Doesn't seem like something the boxing community needs to speak on.

The father says he didn't know that his son felt like that inside about him. His father was just embarrassed that his son broke down, and exposed what a scoundrel he was. Teofimo did that knowing full well that the whole world would be watching, and hearing exactly how he felt about his father. The son was expressing that he wont be taking much more flack from his father. He also has to know deep down inside that he wont be working his son's corner much longer. If Teofimo loses to Lomanchenko then the break up between father, and son will probably happen even sooner.

I don't pay too much attention for that. Mayweather jr and Floyd Sr have never been a good father-son relationship. But in the ring it was a successful for most of his entire career. Sometime this type of rivality between them, brings out the best of the fighter
