Maybe young people aren't enamoured with the thought of watching 2 people trying to inflict brain damage to each other by repeated punches to the head.

They'd rather interact with a screen where by they run around virtually with guns instead.

There's loads of reasons

No consistent narrative, a lot of sub par presentation, undercards are usually trash, fragmented titles, crusty old promoters guts like fish eyes, arum, Shirley Winkle who dint understand the youth, and on and on it goes.

UFC is way easier to follow, more condensed, better presented and has good undercards

I still prefer boxing

I think the perception of boxing aimed towards the youngsters is the notion of discipline.

It's like, oh, there's an angry child, let's take him along to the local boxing club to get that energy and anger out and help put some discipline into him. Many a boxers when you hear the stories of early childhood and how they got into it are pretty similar.

Of course people get involved at early ages due to family members etc.

Is it possible for schools to afford/bring in the right coaches who can give the right advice and teach the art of boxing rather than give them a pair of gloves and let them knock the shizer out of each other?

Most sports you can do within walking distance out of your front door, on the streets, at the park etc and they are free.. Boxing clubs are few and far between round my parts.

I also think there's a stigmata towards boxing.

This is a short attention span era. Traditional boxing fans can endure and enjoy a 12 to 15 round fight. Today's generation can only tolerate a quick fight. That's why a lot tend to gravitate towards MMA. Those fights are quick - even those that go to the scorecards. A lot of today's generation is also very soft. They don't watch sports like that anymore anyways.

America likes bs talkers, that are americans, individuals who are involved in social media, who sale snickers, and can care less about the boxing factor. Floyd sealed the deal with all of that. Americans do not have that right now. The best boxers in the world as of today are not American. If you add that the mid generation and forward of millennials are weak-sensitive cry babies... it is over kill for boxing.

I disagree there is no home town to cheer for. The Irish love an Irishman, the Japanese love a Japanese, etc. There is also an important fact the author missed: people want Mike Tyson but boxing media tries to give them Mayweather. Most men dont care about how much skill the very defensive fighter has, kids never will. Kids want a superman who destroys.
