Comments Thread For: Callum Smith: I Would Jump at Opportunity To Fight Canelo!

WBA super middleweight champion Callum Smith is ready and willing to fight toe to toe with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. Earlier this month, Canelo scored a twelve round unanimous decision over Daniel Jacobs to unify the IBF, WBA, WBC middleweight titles at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Canelo should fight Boo Boo. Then GGG trilogy. I think the top 168 guys beat Canelo.

It should be at 168 and there should be a rehydration clause. Canelo is probably more naturally somewhere between a MW and SMW at 5’9. In fact Smith should probably be a Cruiserweight. The man is 6’3 and fighting at 168? But it just isn’t his height (which is a big factor) but his frame is huge. I can’t see him making SMW for much longer unless he is draining and starving himself. And for that he should be penalized as all boxers should with a rehydration clause. I’d rather see the best fighting at their more natural weights.

Canelo can win, just has to apply smart pressure and attack the body religiously, a guy that big has to be killing him self to make weight so a sustained body attack from Canelo would do the job!

Canelo’s history is a catchweight for everything and/or rehydration clause. Where was everyone saying that it was unfair for him to force middleweights to fight at 155? Nobody even knows Canelo’s natural weight, because he fights at any weight he wants. For a year we’re told he’s a blown up welterweight and he can’t make 160 and then he fights JCC jr at 164.

And there’s no doubt that Mundo should be at LHW, but two guys with 168 titles fighting to unify 168 titles shouldn’t have ****** catchweights associated.

I won’t argue your point on the 155 because there is no argument it shouldn’t have been allowed. HOWEVER I don’t blame Canelo or his team for these clauses. I blame the sanctioning bodies for not enforcing the divisional weights and also the opposing boxers for not flipping him the bird and telling him and his team to take a hike.

Had every boxer that was told they must agree to those terms refused either Canelo would have 1) been forced down a weight division 2) been forced to fight within the terms of the actual divisional weight by the sanctioning bodies 3) been forced to agree to the terms of the opposing boxers because if every boxer refused his terms Canelo would have been forced to fight, not made any money or forced to relinquish his titles.

It takes two to tango 1) the boxer setting the terms and 2) the opposing boxer to accept the terms
