Comments Thread For: The Ladder To Stardom: Canelo's Ups (Many) and Downs (Few)

By Michael Rosenthal - Canelo Alvarez has built himself into arguably the No. 1 attraction in boxing on a step-by-step basis over the last decade. The Mexican outpointed Matthew Hatton to win his first of seven major titles in 2011 and followed with 17 major events a calculated mlange of mismatches and le...

Here's what Canelo is missing and what hurts in P4P discussion: He lacks a signature win over an A level opponent. By signature I mean clear cut decisive victory where he wins at least 8-9 rounds.

His 4 biggest victories: Cotto, Trout, Lara and Golovkin were all either competitive or controversial. None can be considered decisive.

Jacobs is another one of the those top fighters, and here's Canelo's opportunity to pick up a clear cut win and establish him as top 3 P4P.

Name me 1 current fighter whos considered p4p that has a better win than prime trout at 22? Or winning at all against someone better than ggg let alone clearly? The entire p4p list pales in comparison to canelos wins, theres a reason he has had several close fights (because hes fought the best more often than 90% of boxers esp. by age 28(that casuals hate on because their casual eyes see what they want to with tunnel vision. Name me one A fighter in his absolute prime that any recent fighter has beaten by a clear 8-9 rds?

Honestly the gift scorecards he get hang around his career like a cloud of flies. I see that people are backsliding on Golovkin II now where now the narrative was that "it was unclear" or "it could have gone either way". The consensus back then was like 90% in favour of Golovkin winning that fight and I concur, I thought it was a clear robbery. If that was just the one time then I probably wouldn't hold it against him so much but it seems like he's always the beneficiary of any crap scorecard in any of his fights, even against Mayweather. He's a very good fighter but I honestly can't help but hold that against him - I'd actually probably like him a lot more if he'd lost like he should have done in either Golovkin fight.

That was interesting. My opinion of Canelo as a boxer is very high, but it fell a little once reading the entire stiry.

The judging does indeed hang over his career 'like a cloud of flies' (well put), and he would be equally well thought of without it, possibly more so.

His PED conviction hangs over him. He is a cheat like Miller. His excuse is just as bad as Furys eating uncastrated wild boar lol. P4P Lomachenko is the best without question he is 100% clear cut best in his division and never had gift decisions but Canelo got gifts both times against GGG and everyone knows it apart from Canelo nuthuggers.

he selected Trout, when he didn't have to.....
he selected Lara, when he didn't have to.....
he selected Golovkin in his first real fight at 160, when he didn't have to.....
and he selected Danny Jacobs, when he didn't have to.....

" because he didn't have to "..... is LITERALLY the excuse that Golovkin fans have given me, when I asked them why G never lifted his finger to make those kind of fights

... I remember that the Trout fight was "open scoring", right?
