Comments Thread For: McGirt: Kovalev Wasn't Difficult To Work With; Up To Him Now

FRISCO, Texas Buddy McGirt was warned working with Sergey Kovalev would be difficult. The former light heavyweight champion had a very public parting of ways with longtime trainer John David Jackson following his technical-knockout loss to Andre Ward in their June 2017 rematch. Then, after Eleider Alvarez stopped him August 4, Kovalev got rid of another trainer, Abror Tursunpulatov.

It boxing terms it’s called a “rematch clause “. That is where one person is the Champion, other is obviously the challenger, and the Champion, and usually always does, stipulates a rematch in case of a loss. You know.. boxing 101 class

“Cruz, the strength and conditioning coach that helped McGirt make the late Arturo Gatti into a again, gave Kovalev every dietary advantage possible during this camp.”

One again, I offer my editor services FREE and no response from this site. YES, they get breaking news faster than most. But don’t claim to be the BEST website when the grammar in 90% of your articles is trash. Example #73.

Kov said he over trained for the first Ward fight, which he looked good in.

So for the second Ward fight he said he trained less, and looked horrible.

Y’all do the math, but it seems to me that training less doesn’t work well for him.

I don't think 'overtraining' is really a thing, and I don't think Kov overtrained for the first Ward fight. I think he worked his ass off for that fight since he knew it was a career defining moment for him and he was really motivated to see if we was better than Ward.

After he was robbed I think he has had a mental block a little bit on training - I think he doesn't want to put in all the work again just to get robbed. So he hasn't quite trained as he needs to, because if he loses, he can tell himself he just didn't work hard enough and knows he can really beat the guy.

I think the robbery really messed with his head but as a man and a fighter he has to get over that. Will be interesting to see what Kov shows up tonight. He looked good at weigh-ins but I favor Alvarez by late KO again.

I think when he says he was overtraining, he is referring to the amount of work he had to do to lose weight close to the fight. McGirt said that in the past Kov would wait until the last minute to lose the weight and that's probably what happened to him all those time and it weakened him. Poor training habits. If somehow Kovalev could learn to use a left hook and go to the body, he'll be very hard to beat. If he's going into this fight with the same gameplan, then it will be the same result

Ok I think in that sense over-training is a real thing. I don't think that's what Kov was referring to here but possibly you are correct. I think he was saying he worked too hard in training and tired himself out and he wasn't fresh but who knows
